| Hello all, long time reader first time poster and I am in the need for some help and advice. My long time friend and I have gotten into surf fishing and have had no real luck to speak of. We have come along way with our epuipment and strategy. The first time I swam the baits out as far as I could which was just inside the third sand bar and now we are up to an old ski that can get us out farther. The first time and only time we came close was in OCT on south Mustand Island was a pick up and a drop then about 45 min later a hook up and then got cut off both with large whiting. We are now running a 9/0 and a 30W with 500yrds braided then a top shot of 150LB mono. Leaders are cunstruted of 20ft of weedeater line, home made weight, then 8ft of cable with a 20/0 circle hook. Due to work schedules we are unable to do a last minute trips and we have to plan them a month in advance. We have learned something everytime we went out until this last time, which include our gear and deployments. We got to the beach on Monday at 5am. Set up camp then had two baits (rays) out by 7am. We were just south of Bob hall and the water was calm, no weeds, but a little dirty. There was no bait in the water to speak of just a lot of small whiting. We soaked them for several hours then rebaited and had 4 rays out by 830pm which set there all night un touched. The only thing that we have came across in the past is hardheads and whiting with our smaller rods fishing the second gut. I know that this is fishing and not catching but some real advice I think is needed to bring our first catch. We set up a camp so we are not mobile, is that hendering us? Is it just our luck with no bait running or just our locations or just the weather? Most times that we have went it has been rough or a strong current but this last time it was nice but hot. Thanks in advance. |

Sounds like your doing a good job with your strategy. I would suggest PINS for more shark action, but you can catch them where your fishing. Again it is hard to plan a trip in advance with the constant changing conditions, so I may just take several trips before you get into the fish thick. Not sure if your bringing a cast net, but live bait in the surf works really well for trout, reds, ect. Also I would try fresh bait like whiting as well as the bigger baits, I have caught more sharks on fresh whiting with the tail cut off to leave a blood trail than bigger baits so mix it up a bit. Other than that when picking a spot look for areas than look different from the rest of the beach, like points, deep guts, flater surf than the surronding area. Moving tides are important, moon phase, bait activity, just keep trying and Good Luck! _________________ Thanks

| I can't help you on shark fishing. I can tell you that I have caught plenty of slot reds, trout, and smacks in less than 2 foot of surf, like bullshark said, on live mullet. For trout, try to eliminate any stainless rigging because they get spooked by the shining stuff. Use blue or black rigging if you can find it. If this helps, send pictures of you and your catch with the beach and surf in the background. L |

Welcome to the board! Endless place of knowledge and knowhow. Theyre right about the trout and reds skinny surf water. Especially at sun up or before sun down. Biggest trout Ive caught out of there I wasnt even in the water. I cant wait to get to the water because if its anything like they are saying it is, The Big Smacks will be running in the guts as well and that is a great time.
Good luck _________________ Work hard to play harder!!!
