Any reports from the Matagorda beach? Gonna be down there next weekend and was wondering how the fishing had been. _________________ "If I'm going down, I'm going down in flames" |

Boy, I missed an opportunity at Matagorda Peninsula 2 weeks ago. I checked the web cam at matagordabay.com and the water was clear and flat...I could see 2 sandbars and guts from the web cam. Anyway, I chose to go Sunday morning, and the wind kicked up and when we got down there it was super rough. Only managed a few small whiting and hardheads on squid and shrimp that I brought with me. No bait in the surf.
I grew up on PINS, but since I live in Sugar Land now, Matagorda Peninsula is where I manage to get to more than PINS.
Surf looks pretty rough there right now. |

Do you think the wind had the bait scared away or is it just not there. I think the weather is suppose to be really good next weekend when we go down there. I hope we tear em up. _________________ "If I'm going down, I'm going down in flames" |

Would it be better to go to matagorda instead of pins because of the harrashment? Never been there, is it crowded, lots of people parking right next to you? Do I have to post armed guards at night? Plan on going for several days during the week, maybe not as crowded. Could someone let me know how it is. If it is like south of BHP then forget it, rather deal with one time harrashment from a ranger than all day harrashment from other people parking right next to me. _________________ Mastergunner, supporter of hardheads for state fish of Texas |

The last time I went to Matagorda beach was in September. We caught several (5-6) oversized reds from 40"-43 3/4" and one 4' Blacktip. The beach had some debris on it but that was because of the hurricane that had just come through. There were not a lot of people out when we were there. May have seen 10 people the whole time. It is about 22 miles of beach and the bay (Matagorda) is directly behind you about 500 yards at the most from the beach, and even closer in most areas. The driving was great. I would recommend it to anyone that is close or would like to try out a new hole. www.matagordabay.com has a surf cam so you can kinda see what it looks like. Good luck! _________________ "If I'm going down, I'm going down in flames" |

Mastergunner, the crowds aren't bad doring the week. Holiday weekends are a zoo and law enforcement presence is heavy (LCRA security, county, game wardens and occasional DPS). Once you access the beach and turn north, you have 21 miles of beach. 4WD is required most of the time once you pass 3 Mile Cut (actually about 1.5 miles north of the beach access road and usually a good spot to castnet bait). Gorda has a mini-version of the Big Shell high banks starting at about the 7 and the guts are deep and close thru that area. The shell banks run from about the 7 to the 10. There are numerous roads that cut thru from the Gulf beach to the south shore of East Matagorda Bay. Watch for a steel buoy on the vegetation line marked "nude beach" (I've never seen any nudity at Gorda) about 5 1/2 miles from the entrance. One of the cut-across roads is about 100 yards past the buoy. If the surf is too rough, you can allways wade the bay flats. My brothers and I have been fishing and camping at Gorda for over 40 years and have never had any problems with illegals moving north, drug-runners or overzealous Park Rangers. Once you pass 3 mile cut the crowds thin out and it's not hard to find seclusion. Stop at one of the stores in town and buy a beach permit for $6.00. They're good from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. Good luck. _________________ If at first you don't succeed, neither have I. |

Beach pass allows you parking and staying privleges. Nighttime traffic can be noisy at times. Surf undertows can be like PINS and surf seems to be rough(er) but maybe I am a woos(sp?). All good suggestions so far and if you do not feel like making a long run up the beach, turn right as soon as the pavement ends and line up along the first signpost that you see against the dunes. I can not remember if there is anything on the post but it will be alongside a trash can that is usually there. Some oldtimers fish a cut or channel alongside the first to second guts there and do well, depending on weather/time of year.
Good luck and be sure to let us know how you do. _________________ Mike |
