I am not a pier fisherman as I have limited time to fish when I can actually make it to the coast. I would rather get some offshore fishing in and run some long lines from PINS. As it turns out I will have several days coming up where I will be down in Port 'A' and was considering hitting HCP pier while everyone else in our group is crashed in the condo.

That got me thinking on why there are hardly ever any HCP reports and a lot of BHP reports? I think the answer might be that HCP is up north by the condos while BHP is a little further south where the basic 'tourist' wouldn't visit. Would I be right in this theory?

There is good fishing at HCP but you also have so much good structure at the Jetties so that takes some of the pressure off of HCP. I used to try to get reports out there but they were extremely unreliable. The folks in the restaurant who were not fishermen would tell me that a few rainbow trout were caught etc. and it was long distance to get them at that.THe surf fishing is good there when the water is green even in front of the crowded areas.

While over the years, I have fished several times at Port Aransas, I have only actually been on HCP two maybe 3 times.

Normally we go to the jetty's, especially the north jetty if we have time.

I have not taken the time to do any checking, but is the jetty boat still operating?

HCP has always treated me right. Including the surrounding surf areas. As far as the pier goes,if you hit that special light as the sun is setting youre usually in for a treat. They south jetty ofcourse always has great things and a variety to offer in the summer. Ill be down for the annual Fourth of July week trip. I dont mind the traffic either. Just wake up early and get the serious fishing done before the beach is crazy

Back in the 80's I used to split my pier time about 3/1, BH/HC. Both gave up good fish but Bob Hall ws where most of the "serious" fishermen went. I still have to laugh at what some of those guys did that made them look like real saltwater desperados (at least to themselves) HC was more relaxed and I think that was due in large part to the close proximity of the jetties, like Tyler mentioned.

In July 84 I lost a brand new Daiwa 50H and surf pole off HC. I had been out there 8 hours with no luck and my then wife had brought our 4 mo old out on the pier about 30 minutes earlier. I was playing with him in his stroller thingy when I heard the guides wacking the rail as the pole went over. I couldn't get to it in time and watched it hit the water and SKIP along the surface until it was out of sight in the sunset. I had neglected to set the clicker in my excitement at having my son on the pier with me for the first time.

Gotta love the piers. Manta rays , Tiger sharks and God bless'em.... Surfers.

gotta love those pier tourists!

one of the funniest things I saw was this guy from up north fishing with an enourmous spinning reel (upside down of course)... he had the biggest spinner bait I've ever seen.... under an alameda cork....

it was during a really good bull red day in the spring, and for some reason he wasn't catching anything... I let him catch about a 40" red on one of my rods... he was so pumped, but I think he was still confused why I was able to catch fish on a piece of horse mullet, and he hadn't even had a bite on that spinner bait all day.
