I thought I was about time to learn about lures so I am heading out tomorrow for a trip on the flats with no bait. Any tips out there? I have used soft plastics before (mainly because I couldn't find bait) And so know very little about this. I have a couple of "spoons", some topwaters, doa shrimp, and some soft plastics with a little spinner on them. I have used them before when fish weren't hitting bait but never caught anything on them.

Any tips on how fast to bring them in or rod movements to entice the fish would be helpful.

And be where the fish are and NOT be there during slack tide. Just as in gardening and growing food plots: Nothing that you do matters a whit without rain!!! Wink

Nothing can guarantee that the fish are there but slack water is a bust! Embarassed

Kinda made it my goal this summer to learn to master the art of artificials too. Here's what I've learned so far. Everybody has their own "this always works" way of doing it. Some advice is golden and some is BS so try it and if it doesn't work try something else. Buy some Berkley Gulp or Fishbites. Scented artificials may only get you hardheads but at least you caught something at the end of the day. And nothing is better than watchin a fish slam your topwater while your "walkin the dog". If you don't knoiw what "walk the dog" means then youtube it. It's kinda the topwater standard so to speak. Good luck man, hope you catch a few!

I fish nothing but lures. The easiest lure to use is a spoon, just cast and retrieve. No jerking or stopping and starting required and they work great. WEEDLESS is required in the bays. Vary your speed and you will find a comfortable, not extremely slow or fast is best. Try the spoon, gold is my personal favorite, but silver works as well. Never cast a spoon directly on top of a fish, but cast about ten to twenty feet behind them and retrieve, a spoon on top of a fish will certainly lead to a lost opportunity.

I'm sure you will find using lures not only saves you money at the bait stand, but is better for the environment as well.

One suggestion on the spoons ESPECIALLY if you use mono: Before you make any long casts, make some short ones and reel back in watching the action of the spoon. IMHO, you want it to rock back and forth, NOT to start spinning. Even with a swivel this will twist the heck out of your line and at least for me, isn't as appealing to the fish. Every make, model and size has a retrieve speed that gets it rocking without spinning if you just take the time to look first. Wink

Good point Dave. When I first started using spoons I had to pull the first 50 yards of line off my reel every time I used them.

Caught 2 Reds on spoons today in the Laguna. I use a jerk and reel retrieve with 30 lb powerpro and a snap swivel. Never have line twist...Adios

I tie my spoons directly to my floro carbon and don't really have problems w/ line twists. guess I've gotten lucky all these years.

Grab a topwater, a spoon, and a few plastics and go for it. Good luck

I second the gulps and there is a reason every store I have been in the last month is sold out of bone super spook jr's. I have had to recycle some old ones by replacing hooks.

Just curious if anyone else feels this way but I never feel good about lures combined with sitting in one place. I like to be drifting or somewhere I can cover a lot of water wading with lures, if I'm gonna be still which is rarely I will then throw some bait.

Line twist ISN'T a problem if you aren't reeling at a speed that makes the spoon spin. I didn't say that it will happen, only that it can and does IF you reel too fast for the specific bait.

I also said mono only. Braid doesn't have memory, so line twist is moot. Just one more of the MANY great things about the stuff!!! Wink

Thanks for the great tips guys. Headed out today but the fish won. Not a single bite. But from the looks of everyone else out there Nobody was able to find the fish. May have been one of those slack tides. The few hits I saw all were with bait.
