We have been catching the kings off of Port A, but we want to catch some lings. We figured they would hit the same baits as kings. Please shed some light on how to catch them.

not sure what you're using for kings.... but I've always had the best luck catching ling with live bait. I've caught a few on big jigs with a curly tail, but live bait is the best.

you can try anchoring up, and chumming for a while... if a ling is around, they will often swin right up to the boat. Keep a rod with a pitch bait ready to go, and toss it out there right in front of them.

you can also fish some live baits under the surface.. anywhere from off the bottom to under the surface at different depths.

You can also smack the surface of the water with an oar... they are curious fish, and sometimes will swim over to check out what's going on... think of it as a giant popping cork. I've done this tied off to platforms before, and it's amazing how often it works. I would not troll around smacking an oar into the water, because then you would just look stupid... but anchored up, chumming...it's worth a shot.

just in case... if a ling does dwim up to your boat, don't try to green gaff it... it will pull you shoulder out of socket.

as for live baits... just about anything works, big pin perch, sand trout, big croakers, hardheads (no BS) just cut the fins off a hardhead, and it's an excellent bait... they will last forever on your hook too.

Oil Field trash is an east Texas redneck pilgrim! He cant catch any trout much less a ling! Laughing

He must have read the hardhead bait deal- but yeah hard heads are good as well as big crabs- Thats what a buddy of mine throws at them in Destin, Fla when he cant find eels during the ling migration.

I think I've caught fewer ling trolling than any other way...

just throw the anchor out and start chumming.

I guess the best thing to look for is a whale shark.... because there will always be 4 or 5 ling swimming with it....

where are you guys fishing out of? I've caught them where the international ships anchor outside of port A before coming in (about 7 miles). I've heard of a few being caught really close in, but it doesn't seem to be all that normal. You can also try using some good sized live baits around the close platforms, but those are usally fished pretty hard.

I've caught most at platforms though...15-30 miles out.

You will find Ling hanging around anything floating in the water or standing in the water. We find them under sargassum mats, ships, buckets, tree limbs, platforms, even found one hanging around a toilet seat floating offshore one time. Ling fishing is being ready for the opportunity when it presents itself. We always have a pitch rod ready to go.

My grandad always used to attract them by spreading newspaper on the water. Kind of a pain to clean up though.

These days I'd just find a weedline or fish in the shadow of a rig.

Feathertail jigs work well.
