|

Ever have one of those days?
Paddling back from my fishing spot last Saturday, I took a slightly different route
and paddled across some very likely Redfish hunting ground I had not noted before.
I planned on going out there this weekend and explore its potential. With the wind having picked up during the week, I waited till Friday night to pick a day to go fishing. According to the various weather services and our wonderfully accurate local weather prognosticators, Sunday was deemed to be the better day. The chance of T-storms was much diminished and the wind was to lay a little from Saturday. I believe 5 to 12 mph in the morning and picking up later was what I heard on the 10 o’clock news last night, so I was not too surprised when I woke at 4:30 this morning and checked the Bob Hall Site and saw the wind was 21 gusting to 30.
Loaded up anyway and got out to my launch site by 5:30. Wind was blowing pretty hard and the tide was as low as I have seen it in quite some time, things were just not looking up. I spent a while debating whether to go back to the house, go fish somewhere else or to stop thinking like a wimp and go for it. Having a little bit of macho in me, the wimp lost.
Got the Yak off the truck and loaded up all the gear. All I needed was to round up some bait. As I waited for enough light to see what I was doing, company started arriving. I was the first to get there, but it was not long before a dozen vehicles had showed up and folks were heading off in all directions. It seemed that it was going to be a bit crowded on the water today. I usually prefer a little solitude when I fish….it’s a ‘communing with nature’ thing. With the low tide, bait was a little harder to find, but I managed to get a few perch and mullet. Knowing I could find some more where I was going and with the Gulp Shrimp and other lures in the tackle bag, I launched and headed for the area I wanted to fish.
The sun had not yet showed itself on the horizon when I quietly slid onto the grass bed that I was going to anchor up on. Got out of the Yak, grabbed a pole and baited up. Fifteen minutes, four casts, and four mullet later I had three Reds on the stringer and one hardhead released. I was not ready to go home. I worked that same area for the next three hours and released about twenty-five redfish, almost twenty of them in the slot. Also released a number of dink trout and several ladyfish. My last fish was a nice 24” lady that had my reel singing as it stripped line off the spool in three long hard runs. The old saw about it not being over ‘till the fat lady sings’…….the way my reel was singing with that last fish, it was time to go home. Left them biting.
My three reds lying in the grass.
Got back to the truck and spent 30 minutes talking to a couple of yakkers that had just paddled back in before me. Richard, it was nice meeting you. I am sorry I did not get the name of your friend. (Two ‘NO’ votes on beach closure) Also ran into Ron who was wading, it was good seeing you too. I hope I was able to show you a trick or two that will make your next trip a little more successful.
All in all…..just one of those days. _________________ WORK TO LIVE, LIVE TO FISH |
