In those satellite pic isn't (1) current or (2) realistic. One the satellite photos are at least five years old-or older (I checked at my farm and the house I live in, isn't there. I know when I moved in) And the road is scar. Look at pictures of Alaska taken years ago, old oilfield roads show up that were cut through the tundra 100 years ago.
Given the shifting terrain, the new "direction" the park rangers appear headed in and government's apparent interest in keeping everyone out of there, I'd avoid it.

last month there where huge north winds pushing all the water out of the laguna and the tide was very low.. Thats changed. The water is way up there is no way that road is passable. Even if it was plan on getting a huge ticket if your caught back there.. That is driving on the dunes. Id avoid it at all costs..

Robul, you may be right about that. I do that there are signs posted all along the road saying something like " do not go off the road, driving in grasslands prohibited", but it was legal to drive on. That may have changed.
I will ask park ranger Mike about it and let you know. I would not be surprised at all if it is now off limits.

Official word as of today the back road is accessible but not passable. The Northern entrance is a bit farther North than the old one and the Southern access is a bit further South. the recent rains have inundated the road and have left potholes that will damage your vehicles. There is also very soft spots that will get you stuck and you can not go around them. Due to the unique natural aspects of this road it will take about 2 months to recover provided it doesnt rain again. The speed limit is 15 on that road as well so you wouldn't gain any time. Stay off it for now, let it recover.

I ran the back road often back when I fished the island from 75 till 88. I have seen some highways back there and at other time prayed that we would make it through. You know, somtimes you just have to push forward, it was to bad to try and turn around. The Chapel house was long gone before my day, there were reminants of the cattle pins. We, I was led astray by my old buddy Paul, walked to the graveyard once and the mud was worst than it is in the marsh where I fish now. I thought it was absolutely awful and he thought we was in paridise!. Anyway, just my two bits!!!!!!!!!
