I stopped by the cos to pick up some live shrimp yesterday while out on the water. No sooner that I got my boat tied up I see a 35-40 " drum in somebodies hand walking off the pier. I was a little curious why the fish was walking off the pier and not going back in the water. So I follow the fish. These guys go to a truck. Get a trash bag. Another buddy is waiting with his car running. Throw the fish in the bag and hall butt out of there. I get the plate number of the a hole that drove off and also of the guy in the truck that caught the fish and supplied the trash bag. I'm sure they where waiting for this guy to pull up they knew exactly what they where doing. I did call game theft and they did leave me on hold for about 10 minutes but did file the report after that. I'm sure the guy was long gone with the fish after that. They would of had to act pretty fast to catch this guy. Hopefully they still send a warden out to check everyone else's catch. it really really really peeves me to see these guys taking these fish. I don't understand why the people that run the bait stand don't call this sort of thing in? Do they?? I guess they don't want to run people off the pier but come on? If these people keep taking this over sized fish they wont be there next year for us to catch. They offered me a reward I said no thanks use the money to hire more wardens! So anyhow if you want to catch some big uglies they are out there but Please release them!!!

I am really surprised the Cos Way folks didn't say anything to the guy. Don't you have to go thru their office to get off the pier?
I would think they should be the ones calling the GW.
Anyway, kudos to you for taking action! If they didn't catch them then at least they might start visiting the piers more often.

no you dont have to go through the office. You do have the pass the guy that gives you the bait though.. The guy inside probably wouldnt see it unless he was looking right out the door. These guys had it planned though they probably called up there buddy and told them come pick up this fish. As soon as he showed up they gave him the fish and off they went..

I HAVE A FEELING THAT MOST OF THE PEOPLE YOU SEE FISHING THE PIERS AND ALONG SIDE THE CHANNELS ARE NOT THERE JUST TO CATCH A BIG A FISH. THEY WANT FOOD WITH WORMS.

the same thing happen to me when i was fishing off reddot pier a couple of weeks ago. i had caught and released a few oversize drum already and everyone would look at me like i was crazy for throwing them back. i noticed some guys keeping their over size drum in an ice chest, i called game theft and denied the reward also, a game warden came out and checked all ice chest on the piers including mine, i told her i was the one who called and pointed out the guys who were keeping the drum. she caught them and ticked them. im only 23 and i want to be able to enjoy the fight of these big uglies for the rest of my life.

good job Rob... It happens all winter/spring long when the big uglies and bull reds are easily accessible in deep channels. There's more POS fishing rods with wenches on them along every channel at night this time of year than any wardens can keep up with. I've ridden along with my brother in law who is a warden. It's actually hard at times to find fisherman at night who are obiding or even have a license. The long line of excuses you here are tiresome and frustrating too. It's just chaos this time of year and if so many are doing wrong, the wardens can't come close to stopping even close to all of them. The truth is, if you see it and are concerned, let them know what they are doing is wrong, in many cases they'll act dumb and naive, but the fish may get released... then again, you may get cut Very Happy I've seen some rough cats roaming the waters at night.

Cos and company aren't to blame, Cos is banking off of these guys, you've seen them, they'll use 3 weights at a time on a double drop steel leader, buy sea lice by the pound, spool their 3/0 penn up with 50lb test and get after it for days at a time, mostly at night, drum fisherman are a terminal tackle and bait salesperson's dream come true. The fact of the matter is, most or all of them know the rules, but the one's that ruin it for everyone are of course, the ones that just don't give a damn. Greed.

In 1999 I worked as a door-man/bouncer in Denton, Texas, at a local college bar. A couple months later I was promoted to serving drinks as a bartender. Now, mind ya, at that time one or two beers was a "good drunk" for me, for I didn't care for the stuff as I do today. I was told by my boss that we, as bartenders, and as "hook-ups," could give our friends five free drinks per week. He knew we'd do it for free out of peer-pressure; and he knew the more alcohol-tolerant drinkers that came in would take the "Look-over-your-shoulder, and quickly chug your shot glasses or mugs," and become inebriated; and then free-willingly spend globs of money for more alcohol. It was a win-win situation, as I saw it then as I see it now with that bait seller and dock owner you speak of, and about.

Are pay piers governed by any laws? Maybe requiring them to post large "Possessing Over Sized Black Drum is Prohibited" signs during the Drum run would detract some from this activity.

Piers do not over rule the state laws of Texas.

Thank You Very Happy for doing your part to protect the resource, and bringing this up on public forum. This problem is widespread, and does not only include pier fishermen and oversize drum. I get criticized for my objectionable criticism concerning anglers who break the law, and those who seem to have no concern or limitations. Those who clearly break laws set by TPWD concerning bag limits and who keep oversize fish are without a doubt hurting our fragile fishery, and the number of these offenders continues to grow. Concerning limits...well lets not open a can of worms again. I urge we all use proper judement, and listen with open ears and minds to those pleading for conservation. You people know who they are and most respect them. I believe we all have a clear understanding and see what is happening, we just need to be more proactive.
