For the last couple of weeks my wife and I have seen many rays in the surf to include the wade cut. On monday my daughter stepped on one but didn't get hit. Yesterday she got off her tube and stepped on one and did get hit on top of her foot between her little toe and the next toe. We met her at the minor emergency clinic in Port A but since she didn't have insurance they wanted to charge more because I was paying in cash, $400, so I took her home and took care of it myself for free. At lunch today she was doing fine, no pain or swelling. She is walking without any limp at all. So even in the wade cut there are lots of rays.

I have seen more rays in the wade gut than any other part of the surf. They are especially common during times when the crabs are up breeding in the wade gut (spring and summer)

I counted three in about five minutes at PINS yesterday evening. All where extremely close to shore. We all gotta be careful. I guess they were after those coquinas? Might be a Johnny French question.

Glad to hear that she is ok. Tarpon_Tamer got hit a few yrs. ago when we lived in Brownsville. Hit him on the left wrist and he had to go to the hospital. They rinsed out the "venom" w/ hot water and bandaged him up. Your daughter is lucky, he did have LOTS of swelling and pain for weeks after. The swelling went from his wrist down to his left elbow. Was pretty scary. I was not w/ him when it happened. He was fishing w/ a buddy on his boat, and his buddy said it looked like someone had been shot cuz of all the blood.

Long story short, he is now VERY careful when fishing. And he is more apprehensive of the rays now than before.

Crabs, clams, ghost shrimp, snails, sand dollars; in short, any infauna get crunched by stingrays. Our little buddies love the shallows, so if your feet are wet, they're in range.

Don't go back in the water with any cut, even from a a knife, hook, or "friendlier" fish's fin, if you can avoid it. If you can't, smother the nick with antibiotic and tape it closed. Always do the stingray shuffle and carry a first aid kit in the car or truck.

We'll be hearing more stories from the stung this summer, bet on that.

Main reason I took care of it myself was she just had a root canal done and was on antibiotics, the same ones she would have received, she said it didn't bleed much and got it in hot water very quick which may have helped. About a week ago luvsfishin stepped on one in the surf and stumbled backwards and went all the way under water this time with her pole. Most of the time when she falls in the surf you will see one hand with her pole still sticking out of the water. It was very funny.

Sorry to "but in" again. But the guy at the hospital told Tarpon_Tamer that hot water is indeed the best way to get the "venom" out of the wound. And he said it felt a million times better when his wrist was under running HOT water.

She let it bleed a little first then soaked it in hot water at the clinic until I got there. She was able to stop the bleeding with a little pressure.I'm no doctor but I'm not an idiot either. I would say she had it in hot water in about 30 minutes after getting hit so it did help. The hot water did take the pain away also. It did get her good, looked like she had a 12 penny nail drove into the top of her foot. No problems at all with walking or anything. Now some may think I didn't take good care of my daughter in this situation by not letting a doctor look at her but I also called her doctor from my cell phone and was told since she was on medication to just clean it real good, soak it in hot water and put meat tenderizor on it for the pain.
