I was did some research on the Solunar Periods to see what that is all about. The front page on this web site has the moon phases illustrated and that spured my curiosity.

From your experience, what do you know about the moon phases?

How does it effect fishing/ hunting?

I have always heard Full moons at night the fish eat all night and are not hungry the next day. But to be honest I have not noticed much of a connection. Water temp and movement has been the biggest tellers to me.

Can't help you with fishing conditions associated with moon phases. The best time to go fishing is when you have time. I am amazed with how fast the moon changes from day to day. I have enjoyed the moon page. I look up times for the moon rise and set on PINS from time to time wishing I were there. L

Yep, I've been staring at the moon more so now than of late...
(I really like the moon phase thing Tyler.)
Was a lunatic prior but now I have a reason...
Skipjack posted a PM from Mr. Golla a ways back that was very interesting referring to the moon phase, along with other significant factors regarding animal behavior and tendencies....
Sure would like to see that again.

I have fished several full moons in the last year, and one thing I have noticed is that there is no need to kill yourself to be on the water at Sun Rise. Everytime we have gone fishing on a full moon we have had success during the day, but the bite was slow until later in the day. I'm no expert, but that seemed to be pretty constant for me.

I always check this site out before I go fishing. If nothing else, it gives me a little more confidence during certain hours of the day.

I like to fish the new moon. Pitch black in the wee hours of the morning with a low barometer to go along with it. I also caught good fish when the moon is almost underneath. But see I live in the northern turff part of the Bluff, the ratz in the more southern turff area might have a different view on this matter they seem to like the full moon more. Very Happy

us southern bluff ratz like the few days before the full moon especially coming into the spring and summer. but we also like the new moon directly underneath later in the summer for those sight casting days.

We had a similar thread a couple of weeks ago about fishing the moon. here was my response and a link to the thread.

Quote:
Yall ever hear of Solaunar Tables and major & Minor feeding times?????

Well, that is the moon!!! Moon directly overhead or directly under foot is a MAJOR feeding period and the moon on the horizons are MINOR feeding periods.

So think about it.... Those really productive evenings just before a full moon, I have them too. Why? Because the moon rises before the sun goes down just prior to the full moon. That means you have a minor feeding period stacked on the natural end of daylight feeding period. WHAMMO, FISH ON!!!!!!

During the full moon, you have a major feeding period when the moon is directly UNDER foot in the middle of the afternoon. I always do really well fishing the middle of the afternoon on the full moon.

After the full moon I do well in the mornings when the moon sets mid morning stacking a minor feeding period on top of a natural sun up activity.

New moons rock because you have the same conditions as a full moon but dark dark nights. This means the feeding occurs mostly during the day.

Start taking note of the wildlife around you. You will start to notice such things as livestock feeding at 2pm on a 105 degree day. WHY??? The moon is either over head or under foot. Start watching and you will see it is true.

If I can plan a trip to the coast, I try to plan them around good tidal movements and I fish them according to the moon or solunar periods.

My 1st experience with the solunar tables was at a deer lease near Bandera. A friend swore by them and said 'take a look at the major and minor in the local newspaper and that's when you'll see game'. I went out to my stand the next morning...glanced at my watch when I started seeing movement - a couple of doe and a bunch of hens(turkey) within about 10-15 minutes of eachother. Lo and Behold - right at the beginning of the minor for that day.

Yep- I agree with GoinCoastals' remarks. I suspect that fish and game are much more apt to respond to grevitational changes than humans are. I can only tell when I'm in the middle of a 'gravity storm'. Wink

Me and a hardcore fishing bud used to (1980's) look at the cows as we were driving from SA to CC on 37. Sometimes they were laying down in the same general direction and others times all feeding.
We joked and talked crud about the special meaning of the cows activity and about how it related to the general fish bite at the time.....
