Fishing 2-20-09 with minnows. Caught 9 nice crappie from 10 ½ - 14 ½ inches. Only one throw-back. Also released a small blue cat and a small bass. Fish fry Sunday for extended family. Grandson says “YES”!!
Half had not fully-developed eggs. Largest one actually took some line. I probably lost 7 or 8 that were hooked but got off. I missed 4 or 5 other real good bites.
Everyone is looking forward to eating some delicious crappie tomorrow. We’re tired of all the trout from last summer and need a break. You think 30 crappie for 12 people will be enough? Plus fries, pintos, and corn-on-the-cob. YUM-YUM! I guess if I have to I can break out some more trout if that’s not enough.

Rick, what area of the lake are you catching these at? I've done well with Crappie on Lake CC, but never have caught any at Choke. I'd like to try Choke sometime this year during the spawn. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

They are one of the best eatin fish anywhere. Maybe bluegill are tied with them.
Choke Canyon is near Three Rivers. They catch a lot of them at Mason Point and also upriver about a mile from the highway 99 bridge on the left side where there are rocks down to the water. Crappie are supposed to like it because the rocks heat up in the daytime and help keep the water warm at nite. They don't fight real hard because they are mostly just 10-15 inches long. I don't fish for crappie for the fight, mainly for the challenge, because they taste so good, and they give me some fish to catch in the winter.
During the spawn they are caught in very shallow water using minnows or jigs. Right now the ones I catch are shallow suspended in deeper water in the main river. I am tight-lining minnows. They don't hit hard at all. Just watch for your line to go off to the side and set the hook.
My all time favorite, what I dream about, are those big trout I've been catching in the surf in the summer. That's more fun than most anything I know of.

Ditto on the good eating crappie. They are the best. My holes are up in Lake LBJ. I like to use minnows that I've seined right out of the same lake that I'm fishing. I works much better than the store bought kind. It's their natural food. Pics remind me of good times - I just lost my crappie buddy to pancreatic cancer about 6 months ago. He was an avid bass fisherman for tournaments but loved to fish for crappie for fun. I miss him a lot.
I guess it's that time of year. Go get 'em!
