|
|
For those who are still using Windows 98/2000/Me or XP, forgoe Windows Vista if you are using an expensive digital camera. I just learned my lesson. My last digital camera cost me nearly three hundred American sheckels and was compatible with XP. However, moving up North and having to leave behind my computer, fishing equipment, furniture and most of my clothing, I made sure I had my digital camera and software; and not knowing that my cousin's computer, upon moving in with him, his Vista "upgrade" would not work with my software.
I took 112 pictures upon my arrival at Anchorage airport well into the following day when I visited ex-but-still-oh-so-yummy, vice-president-nominee Sarah Palin's childhood home (Lucille @ Parks Hwy), to me out on Wasilla Lake. I was royally p*ssed to not be able to download my pictures.
I've sent three emails to Vivitar's new company, Sakar, last night and today, in hopes that I can get a "patch", to update my camera from XP to Windows Vista. No response.
No problem? Well, you have another thing coming, as Judas Priest would exclaim! So this afternoon I was on the phone with my Momma and brother, to sulk over my digital camera problems; and to tell them that the sun rises at 9 am in the morning and sets around 4 or so pm -- and the mountain heights seem to hover around 15,000 plus feet, thus further delaying the sunrise and further darkening the sky prior to an official sunset. That sunrise/sunset has become a dichotomy of sorts to me, in contrast. In addition, on a sunny day (last Wednesday) I took many pictures, to show the beauty of sunlight striking peaks and cascades, illumanating valleys and darkening crevices with each passing cloud -- all within eye-reach of my front porch.
Today, I visited Wally World and purchased a new digital camera (4.1 Mega Pixel) to use in the meantime. And knowing it was an "el cheapo" at 44 bucks, to assuage my frustration and was/is Vista compatable, I was happy. So I get home and take pictures of my fried halibut, baked salmon and steamed king crab. I do have those pictures (if anyone is interested.)
I soon find my camera is limited to only two pictures without a memory card. I call Wally world and they are out of 'em; I am redirected to purchase one at Fred Myer's (like a Costco or Sam's Club) in either Palmer or Wasilla.
If all goes well tomorrow, to solve my dang camera problems, I'm fishing Wasilla Lake or Cottonwood on Sunday....Instead of using a gas powered auger, my cousin and I will go Texas Chainsaw massacre on the ice....ya know, on the ice.....and the trout!
I'm living in a 1100 square foot duplex with a nearly empty, heated garage that would neatly hold traveling company. (Hint, cough, hint).
I live within minutes of great fly-fishing (1/2 mile to 15 miles), many lakes (1/2 mile to 15 miles) and rivers.
Gimme a call if I know ya: 907-373-0131
Oh, by the way, I will soon buy an underwater camera to take pics of silver, red and king salmon soon. My cousin said to snorkel for 'em; and I will |

| Instead of using the camera software, can you just plug it in and see a removable disk show up after opening the "my computer" icon? Almost all digital cameras basically emulate a portable hard drive. This should work without installing any software on the computer. |

With my new camera I am not allowed to "power off" without losing any photo-data. The gateway from snapping two pictures is, roughly ten to twenty seconds; and leaving the camera on, I must rush to attach the USB cord to download.
Gonefishing, if you are referring to my "old" camera, tried that, and done every trick in the book. I'm not worried. Put it this way, if I saw a UFO or Tommy Chong in my hypothetical, special garden, or I saw Li'l Red Riding Hood, I'd darned be ready to snap a photo....I am literally going bonkers at the absolute beauty of Alaska.
For example, Lake Wasilla is a "wild lake," and has been around for ages. It is connected from Cottonwood Creek and runs for miles until it empties into Cook Inlet (salt water gulf). Red and Coho (Silver) salmon breed there and fishing for them in the creek or lake is off-limits. However, the trout are monsters, living off rotting salmon carcases for most of the winter and gobbling up on endless roe from the "runs." I bought a new ice fishing rod at Sportsmen's Warehouse today, and two old salts told me they landed one 8 and a 14 lb rainbow the other day, for their biggest catches.
And to see the mountains from here beats everything I've ever seen. I do not have the prose and poetry to describe the absolute beauty of this place. Pictures will soon suffice.
And trust me, Tyler is more than welcome here, lodging free. My cousin will land him big trout, halibut, salmon and "poor man's lobster."
And Bluffer, you are invited too -- that is, if you forget all those Coors beer commercials, of their finest ingredients coming from, among other things, the Rockies....dude, that hippie-liberal Colorado Springs water tastes like a, um, chlorine tablet....up in Wasilla the tap water has no traces of crapola yet seems to have eminated from bottled Ozarka.....that is nooooo joke!
You'll see what I mean soon.

Power off without losing data? That sounds odd. I'd get a new camera. Decent ones are very cheap and you just have to take the memory card out with most computers and they will either upload automatically or act like another small hard drive where you can look at and copy, move or edit your pics.
Looking forward to the pics. |

Tyler,
I am absent a memory card; hence with no card I have no memory....I find it a minor inconvience. If you'd like I can scan the paperwork that came with this temporary piece of crap! I was hesitant learning about Vista after spending hours online to figure I had no "update" or "patches" available for my prior and much beloved camera. I felt robbed....but I am fastly encumbering the nature of this electronic "bidness." |

| I get you. My camera has a small internal memory. You should be able to get some sort of smart card for that at Walmart. |

Tyler,
I contacted Fred Meyer's and the small chain store has the memory card/stick available. I just hope the pics turn out half way decent, for now....
I'll be out gold prospecting soon and I definitely want great pictures...And I want underwater salmon pics to rival the ones Oz has of sheepshead over a sandbar.....
I guess time will only tell, and I am dedicated to making my dream a reality, being it in prose or crystal clear pics.....Stay tuned! |

have a blast up there..
if you have a sd slot in the computer or printer.. you can save it on the harddrive and email it.. but not able to view it..
try Picasa... that might allow a link for you to view on vista..
good luck, _________________ Fish and Hunt Baby.... so tight lines and clear scopes. |

Crab, what camera do you have, I mean the older camera that won't work with Vista?
Tell me what it is and I will tell you what you need to make it work.
