|
|
I've been asked to post how I build a perch trap. It took me awhile to figure out how to post a picture on here,,, so here goes.
First, buy two rolls of 1/2 inch hardware cloth 24"X 60"
Cut 2 pieces 24"X24"
Next, take the other piece and cut it longways into 2-12" strips
Then fold the 2-12" strips back against the grain,,
Take the 2 pieces and place them on one of the 24X24 inch pieces and center them up and start hog ringing them to it, tie wire or electrical tie straps can be used,,
cut off the excess where the 2 pieces come together,,
Leave about 6 inches in the center of the 2 pieces where they come together to make entrances, and on the other 2 cut out the wire to make slits for the bait to enter the trap,,
widen the slits a little
Fasten the top in the same manner of the bottom
Cut a 6"X6" hole in the top of the trap
Next, cut a 8"X8" piece of wire and attach at 1 end to make lid,, Make sure it can be opened and closed
Now you have a perch trap,,

Great job man. I would only suggest to cut the door out with the wire ends close to the door, leaving the longest cut sections around the opening on the trap itself. Then bend those under to keep from raking your mits while going in and out. Those wire ends are bad news!!! _________________ Dave

Nice job and pics. Why the four circles instead of just rectangular? _________________ Fishing and Kayaking its a rough life but somebody has to do it. |

It's made in a cloverleaf congiguration because the perch will approach it and follow the contour of the trap, as they swim around the outside they they sense getting closer to the bait as they enter the inside of the cloverleaf,, leading them to enter the opening.. _________________ It's a conspiracy, I tell ya,, There's no such thing as being too drunk to fish !!

Thanks Barnacle Bill. Thanks for this post. I've been wanting one of these but I wasn't going to pay $40+ for a little wire. I went to the Big Box store today and got the hardware cloth and tried to get some hog rings and pliers. No one knew what I was talking about. I guess I can find them at Ace Hardware. Where did you get your's? _________________ Character is doing the right thing because it is the right thing to do, not because someone else is making you do it.

Hey Gramps, the last time I made perch traps I cut the mesh in such a way that I was able to fold over the ends of the mess to make the connection.
I can't think of how to drescribe it, but leave the tag ends of the mesh on the trap piece that get shaped. Lay the end panels on the shaped piece and bend the tag ends around the wire of the end panels. May not be as sound as using hog rings but it worked well for me.
Hog rings are used in upholstery shops. Try an upholstery supply. Or, try a Tractor Supply. Sounds like a good place for "hog" rings.
