Had an old black lab, Bubba the dog, that we dearly loved. I never worried about my wife being safe when I left town with Bubba around. A friend was delivering some firewood for us. Bubba was at the front window watching all this. The guy turned around after getting a log out of his truck and ran into my wife. She stumbled backward and fell. That dog tore up the drapes and blinds and the window sill before I could get in and calm him down. Our friend was so scared that even though the dog was in the house he jumped into the cab of his truck. Another time my wife almost stepped on a small snake in the back yard. She didn't see it, but Bubba did. He jumped between her and the snake, barking all the while, and started backing up, forcing my wife away from the snake. Another time my wife opened up a cabinate and there was a huge green praying mantis there. It startled her and she screamed and the dog did the same thing. Got between her and the cabinate, began barking and backing up forcing her away from the critter. Another time she yelled when she saw a coon in the back yard with her. That dog backed her up a few feet, then attacked the coon and killed it within about 20 seconds. I've heard lots of stories about how tough coons are and how they tear up dogs, but when Bubba though something was endangering my wife he knew no fear. Really miss that old dog. _________________ Big Ed

awsome stories..sounds like a wonderful friend. reading your stories made me remember one scary day. we kept him in a kennel while we were gone. one day we came home and his kennel was destroyed, he was trying to get out so bad he cut himself all to hell smashing and biting the cage. we let him out and he bolted around the house. flying as fast as he could, upstairs, downstairs, back upstairs, every closet, behind..under...over everything in the house. he never acted like that...so we knew someone must have gotten inside while we were gone, but he couldnt do anything about it. a very wierd, strange feeling came over us, we just knew something wasnt right. still dont have closure.
TYLER...gorgeous dog man!!! _________________ "When times are tough,

I too have lost "the perfect dog". I don't know why it is, but we only seem to get just one "perfect dog" in this life. I'm no reincarnation believer but I sure as shell hope to meet my beloved Pappy in the after life.
Great pic of the doggie biscuit on his nose. That speaks volumes about his demeanor. Everybody always tells you to hurry out and get a replacement dog but I just couldn't do it.Every other dog would be compared to Pappy.
Once again, I'm very sorry for your loss. |

My last pooch was a lab/ mixed shepherd mix and was the smartest and toughest dog that I ever had, and we've had many over the years. That dog would dive out of eyesight and retrieve whatever you threw in the water and didn't know the meaning of the word "quit". Hey Big Ed, people talk about how tough cats are too........................... Pepper killed 4 of them that REALLY deserved it [they made the mistake of scratching her when she was just trying to be friendly]. GOOD DOG!!! She made it to almost 15 but the shepherd part in her turned her spinal chord to mush just above her tail so that she had no use of her rear end for the last 9 months of her life. I had to "do the deed"............................................... hardest darn thing that I ever had to do and I hope to never have to do it again. Buried her under a small oak tree out back in 1997. I still talk to her when I go by and rub the leaves on that tree with a smile _________________ Dave

The_Bluff_Rat,
Sorry to hear about losing one of your family. I've had dogs all my life and they are the best friends one can have. My current dog Max (boxer) is one of the best I've had in a long time - it is amazing when they seem to know what your thinking and what you want done. He is 8 and at the present is recovering from the removal of 2 skin tumors and I found another one the other day.
This is a pic I used on the back cover of my Upper Coast book (taken along the Oso shoreline):
In this pic, in my wife's car (she gives me permission to drive it on occasion) - taken at the Sylvan Beach Pier in LaPorte:

Shih Tzu
I know, its a girlie lap dog, but they are the perfect size for camping, loyal, smart enough to not chase parked cars and even though they have long hair ( not fur ) they rarely shed.
I don't know if it is true of all of them, but ours seems to make long lasting friendships with most people that she meets.
For example:
The UPS driver that services our neighborhood. She runs out to his truck to great him each time he delivers ( and climbs up inside ). If there is someone else driving, she just sits at the door and barks. There have been many times that her 'friend' has just stopped when he was in the area just to see her for a minute or so. She also acts the same way with our regular mailman and a couple of the people that work at the RV resort we frequent in Port A.
She just loves to meet people.
Gracie...
