After spending the morning recovering from eating, drinking, and otherwise being merry Christmas Eve, we launched the boat and ran (through some incredibly thick fog in from Harbor Island intersection to near the end of the jetties) around the corner to outside the North jetty.
As was expected, the goatheads are everywhere, though you'll burn up a lot of hoppers trying to get a limit of any decent sized ones.
Caught probably twenty in three hours, though only kept three for my boss and his wife for dinner.
I was hoping the trout would be loitering around, but nothing other than sheephead.
If the weather holds, I'll try it from the rocks tomorrow or Sunday, looking for what should normally be a very good trout bite this time of the year.
Fishing on Christmas, in shorts no less...I love Port A _________________ I'd rather be fishing |

Matt,
Went out from 7:00 to 9:00 friday a.m., north jetty. Caught 4 trout in the first 30 minutes and the bite shut off. All nice trout; 26", 25", 23" and 22".
The gang from San Antonio were going to stay the day lemon rigging and free shrimping. The sheephead were covering them up but were catching a nice trout every 30 minutes or so.
I have been walking the rocks 3 or 4 times a week since the water dropped and it has been the typical winter pattern: better on outgoing, better(size) trout on channel side, no current no fish; pink in reasonably clean water and dark (purple for me) in dirty water.
Let's go play,
Nick |

Sure thing, just name the time/date. I haven't looked at the tides at all but it seems the wind will be stiff from the SE tomorrow, then switching to NNE Sunday (according to accuweather.com anyways).
Haven't tried worms at all this year; managed a couple slot reds on the South Jetty Thanksgiving day using 4" gulp.
If you're going over this weekend, let me know. I've seen the results, but never seen you in action _________________ I'd rather be fishing |
