OK, I get a break in this chemo crap next week so I’m coming down from Dallas for a few days.
My question is: Since BHP is closed, I want to give the surf a shot. I have the gear but haven’t actually done it yet. Where do I go? I just want to go somewhere where I won’t be in any ones way, can work on my cast net skills (which suck) and have a shot at some fish all while enjoying Gods gifts. The only beach I’ve driven on is at the Packery so I don’t have a clue where to go . I drive a Isuzu Rodeo but it’s not 4wd.
I often see guys talk about the mile markers but I’ve never really seen one.
Thanks once again for your help and I really hope some time I can meet some of you guys.
I await…the wisdom of the forum.

hopefully the weather will hold and beach fishing and driving will remain good. Packery Channel Jetties might be a good first stop for you.
the mile marker reference is to the Padre Island National Seashore (PINS). the beach changes slopes and bars/guts the farther you head south. this weekend driving was great from the asphalt end ( 0 mile marker) to the 15, and then rapidly deteriorated into some nightmarish pluffy sand. _________________

Yea, I plan to hit the Packery and have fished there before but I really want to try the surf. Your right about the weather though. I don't know if I will be able. Thanks for your help..... _________________ One day I will be too old or too dead to fish...until then I'm showin up |

The "sticks" are on the north end of Malaquite beach and can be accessed from BHP on the beach or you can drive down the park road and take the last road on the left before entering the park. This is a good place to try.
Really, you just need to find a spot you like and park it. This time of year the surf is full of fish so you shouldn't have too hard a time finding some. Also, the surf should have some bait for you to work on your cast netting.
Let us know how you do. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

This past Saturday, I was getting finger mullet with the castnet in ankle deep water on the surf during low tide. About 90% of the finger mullet had cuts and bite marks on them. One of them even had parts of his guts exposed. Since all I caught with them was Spanish Mackerel and Ladyfish, I can only guess that's what was tearing them up. _________________ HighTide

There are lots of guts and holes along the PINS. But sounds like to me, you'd enjoy just making a right once you hit the beach and parking anywhere you like. There is a sign stating you ought to have 4X4 if you are going past it. Sometimes the driving is good and you can go past. Other times, you can't. You'll be fine, but take a shovel anyway. Enjoy.

also if mullet are hard to come by, you can usually catch a few whitting on a gulp and a jig head in the surf, and use them for cut bait, or if they are big you can eat them too, not bad at all.
i'd go with with north of the sticks, rarely is the driving bad there and there is also no beach parking permit required there. and usually a mellower crowd
have fun |

What TD said, lots of fish w/in reach of the sand.
HighTide,
I bet most of those mullet where probably smaller sized. They get de-scaled in the shallow water against the sand/shell and then ripped up pretty bad. They are good bait still but not as lively and often attacked for there obvious weakness by smaller fish that would not normally eat them. |
