Mr. French,

I have yet to ever see the beach with that many vehicles so close together even up on the dunes. Then again, I avoid the beach on holidays and most weekends in the summer.

Is there anything being done to demonstrate or prove the faultiness of such "hogwash"? If these idiots are willing to brazenly run a large, color page ad with misconceptions, it should be no surprise to the crimes they are committing behind the scenes.

Why don't we take an aerial of the pedestrian only beach that we already have and show how little to no use it gets? We could even do it this holiday weekend.

The idiots want pedestrian only beach, and they do not even use what is already available.

I got into a semi-heated debate the other day about this beach closing. This ignorant individual wants to see the whole beach closed. Why? Because of all the cry babies in the arena. I took care of that right quick like. What did he think he was doing, according to his terms of crying, in our discussion?

Something he said got me to thinking, though. If and when, and I have been told that they have been contacted, the Federal government steps in they will close everything down.

What are your thoughts?

I had the exact same idea about hiring DR's aerial photo company to do just that this holiday weekend but now it looks as though the weather will keep the bigger(yet still small) crowd away from the pedestrian only beach at Malaquite.

Gib, that ad full of hogwash was among the stupidest things on so many planes that the beach blockers (BBs) have ever done. Among the things it did was to infuriate folks into responding just as you did. Since the BAC hasn't the money to run full-page color ads, I hope those BBs keep on stubbing their toes like that right up until the April 7 election.

As you and Tyler indicate, it would be nice to show just what kind of use the beaches already closed to vehicles get, but, when you stop to think of it, if those closed beaches were so popular and the BBs were so hot to prove it, why haven't they already taken and published the aerial photos of them? It's because the evidence isn't there. That must have frustrated the BBs no end, and may have contributed to their publication of the photo demonstrating the popularity of the beaches open to driving, the effectiveness of separating lanes on such beaches, and the City's violation of the Clean Water Act.

Gib, you and others expressing a concern that the Feds will close everything down need to remain alert to that remote possibility in case the BBs are dumb enough to keep pushing for beach closures. Now that the Feds are alerted to the Clean Water Act violations, the City's other loopy decisions that concentrate people on critical habtiat and during turtle nesting season are going under a microscope. The other side of the coin is that the public gets a shot at making sure what the Feds do in response isn't just as loopy. Among my arguments to the Feds have been that keeping the beaches open to driving is less harmful to endangered species than letting the City concentrate the driving, as well as the pedestrian public, as shown on that ad, so developers can get richer. One response scenario might be that if we keep closing beaches to vehicles we'll eventually reach that point of deadly concentration, so we might as well close all the beaches now. We need to impress upon the Feds not to buy that scenario, but to adopt the one that says what wasn't broken doesn't need fixing - don't close any more beaches.

I'm reasonably comfortable that the City will eventually get its permit to continue to groom the beach, but with conditions that minimize harm to the endangered species. Those conditions, following the precedent set at the PINS, will include at a minimum that scraping and filling the beach during the turtle nesting season will take place only with turtle patrols right in front of the front end loader. You'll recall that PINS didn't close its beaches to the public to protect the turtles when the drilling companies brought in road grading equipment to remove the ruts the 18-wheelers left. And, if we're lucky, the Corps will buy the argument that not only is it unnecessary to close the beaches to protect the piping plover's critical habitat from scraping and filling within it, but that such closure contributes to an adverse modification of that habitat. If it does buy that argument, the Corps will condition the permit to reverse the beach closure south of Packery Channel before the voters can next April.

Stay tuned to developments re the beach grooming permit, which the Corps can't process so long as the City keeps getting caught violating the law in the back of the Sunday Caller-Times B section. Laughing Laughing Laughing

Johnny,

I will continue to keep an eye out.

Tyler,

If and when something is needed to promote worthy cause, I will help with what I can.

I am not a rich man by any means, but if all concerned chipped in $10.00 that would get us somewhere. I heard over 12,000 signatures were turned in. Multiply that my $10 or $20.

I will gladly skip a fishing trip or two if it will help display the foolishness of the idiots and help promote all of us to access the beach with vehicles.

Here is a more typical view of the beach, at the end of Whitecap:

Then just what does one of those ads cost to run - assuming equivalent size and the accompanyiing aerial photo costs?

Idea for an ad:

Pictures, A picture of a row of condos scrunched together nice and close to the beach. Anyone traveling to Florida coast will not have trouble finding a subject site. Another picture of a sign saying "Do Not Enter-Private". A picture from a recent issue if the MOON with the auto window glass on the parking lot. Caption: THE WAY THE DEVELOPERS WOULD WANT YOUR BEACH TO LOOK LIKE
Then an opposing set of pictures showing a nice day at the beach from the window at Bob Hall Pier, another with several families WITH THEIR CARS and another with a deserted stretch of beach with shore birds. Picture caption: THE WAY THE PEOPLE WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT.
Then the caption: THE CHOICE IS YOURS,VOTE FOR YOUR RIGHT TO CHOOSE HOW YOU WANT TO ENJOY OUR UNIQUE PRECIOUS RESOURCE.
Might want to do it bilingual to reach out to the whole community. The developers could care less that aint where the money is.

The sign at the end of Zahn rd. has been changed.
I didn't get to look at it but I'd like someone to post a pic of it.

Apparently, I did not make myself clear in my earlier post. Ergo, I will attempt to do so now: HOW MUCH, in U.S. dollars, will such an ad cost? I have several THOUSAND Texas natives up here at Tinker AFB, many, many of whom like to spend their time on the beach just like the rest of the choir here. My endeavor to fund such an undertaking will NOT be an electronic or digital exercise, but a face-to-face, one-on-one verbal exchange to mobilize a financial upswelling for the purpose of putting the true story out in Corpus Christi and the rest of the Texas Gulf Coast. You can e-mail me at home at BaitBoy@cox.net, stephen.gregory@tinker.af.mil, or call me at 405.921.8476, or PM me. If clarification of the intent of this message is necessary please feel free to contact me by one of the above modes to discuss further.

BaitBoy, I appreciate your urgency and willingness to help. What's still unclear is from whom you're expecting a reply. I don't know the answers and may be responding out of turn because I think it was Tyler who brought up the idea of the aerial photo for an ad and Gib who first wanted to know where to send money. I had to ask other members of the BAC to find out the answer to Gib's question, and I don't know if Tyler has researched the costs of his own brainstorm. I'll forward your post to the BORG and relay any answers to this thread. Meanwhile, you can try Tyler and/or the contacts given in one of the stickies.

For convenience, here's the contact info posted yesterday in that sticky:

Checks can be made out to the Beach Access Coalition and mailed to:

Camest L. West
13941 Man O War Ct.
Corpus Christi, TX 78418

Michael McCutchon is spokesperson of the Beach Access Coalition. He is available for media interviews at home 855-8720, or cell 215-4340. People interested in getting involved should probably talk to Hal Suter, the chairman of the BAC, at 852-7938.

Hi Tyler, Baitboy & Johnny French.
I can only give the cost of aerial photos. In this area there is no travel charge. Two views cost $220.00. Another thought, we also do photos on a monthly basis like we do for constrution sites. This cost is $190.00 for two views. The monthlys are usually done on the last weekend of the month. The thinking here is to show people "normal" beach traffic-activity over time, not just during special events which THEY try to pass of as normal day at the beach. I don't if this would help or not, just a suggestion.
I can only give a price that we would quote to anyone as I am an employee not the owner. Hope this helps, Don.

Thanks DR and Johnny. Can anyone get in touch with Sikes and find out from him what the cost of a half page ad is? I tried their website but all I can locate is a phone number to call. One other question - are donations tax deductible? Some contributors may want to know that info. The reason I'm being so persistent about this is that a few of my colleagues up here will want to know just what is required and to ensure that what they pay for is what they get. Nothing personal, that is just the way they operate.

We'll be heading down that way a week from tomorrow and hitting PINS for a little over a week so I'll get to meet some of you I did not know before being banished to Sooner country six years ago. Thanks.
