| I often see people driving with rods in rodholders on the front of their trucks. I was just wondering if this is bad for your rods when you run down the highway with the tips bent back in the wind. |

First of all welcome to the board.
Now to your question. I am no expert by anymeans. But I don't really see that it would hurt your rod as long as you don't hit a bump that will pop it out of the holder and then you run over it. Now that would really tick ya off. Not to mention that it would be really bad for your rod. _________________ Diplomacy is the art of saying "Nice doggie" until you can find a rock.

I see two issues with hauling rods vertically; 1) at 70 mph those tips are whipping back and forth continuously stressing the fibers unnecessarily, 2) standing the rods up at speed makes them more vulnerable to low flying objects like birds, bugs and debry from the truck in front of you. I would rather have them laying down.

Fishing rods are made to flex and bend. I've transported my rods on the front end of my burban for years and never had a problem. Rods that are laid down are more likely to get banged around after a good bump, possibly getting bruised and causing problems down the road. A good bungie cord will keep them from popping out of your rod holders. Transporting your rods up front also keeps most of the sand off of them that usually gets kicked to the back while driving on the beach.
If you original question was in reference to a bent rod or two you might have seen, this is caused when an unsupported rod is left leaning against a wall for a long period of time in hot conditions.
Hope this helps.
Fred

| The problem with having rods upright front or back of the truck is that they get quite a bit of rod grime, bugs and dings from debris all over them. Also, if you pre rig your rods swivels tend to bang against the rods as the rod tips flex back and forth with the wind. All this adds up after repeated trips causing cracks to the epoxy, cracked inserts, damage to the overall coating of the rod and results in possible broken rods when least expected. Another thing is that many people do this with 2 pc rods which get all that grime on the spigot then put the 2 pieces together. This results in multiple scratches, rods hard to pull apart and shortened durability. |

It is also not a good idea to have a Breakaway HDXTB in a rod holder while traveling under a overpass _________________

Everything previously mentioned is better than piling all of your rods together and hanging the tips, bottom rigs and half the rods out the back window of your Ford LTD!!! Sorry I saw this today and missed the picture! |

I keep mine in the back of the durango. I bungee them together to keep them from banging together and causing any damage or making that tick tick tick noise for 3 hours from SA to PINS!
I saw a guy riding a bicycle down Ocean dr once with a 4 pack of rod holders on the back of his bike, all of the rods were in excess of 10 foot! Now that was freaking hilarious! _________________ GOBZA!!!
