|
|
| I was down there this weekend and got stuck, I got out (thankfully) but it got me to wondering how the insurance company reacts when you tell them you got stuck in the surf on PINS and it ain't comming back? I look at the pictures of folks who've gotten their trucks stuck on PINS and those trucks are gonners. Does anyone know what the ins co's do? I figure it depends on the insurance company. |

| I heard the wrecker service that you pay for in your policy may not apply down there also. Depends on where you get stuck, the cost to tow a vehicle out of there is a minimum of $1000 and I heard one guy paid $3000 to get a vehicle out of PINS on the laguna side. A park ranger told me about that some years ago. |

The last I heard it was 65 dollars for a wrecker to come to the pavement then 30 miles for each mile down and back on the beach.
I just received an email saying it cost someone 3 grand to get pulled out recently. |

Ive also heard it cost an arm a leg and a few grandchildren to get a tow. Thats scary. I believe in good karma and ALWAYS lend a hand when i can where ever im at. For the most part i have been pretty fortunate and had my back scratched when ive needed it.
Off getting towed from the sand but my buddys boat broke down and he ended up drifting to the surf and nearly lost his boat to the surf. He ended up getting it towed to port A and they charged him 1,700! Luckily he makes a crap load of money and could afford it. Sucks if you dont! |

| I've got a suburban but I got stuck because I wasn't paying attention, not because I was being an a**hole or anything. It just got me to thinking. Couldn't imagen paying thousands of dollars tho. Ouch. |

When you get stuck, someone will help you out. You will get out most of the time. If you break down, that is another story.
I'm not sure, but I think the railroad commission regulates towing rates. I would love to hear how much a tow truck can legally charge. |

Sanch, did you just go up the beach to high into the soft stuff? I'm curious b/c I want to stay out of trouble when I venture down. I've not been too far down and I want to take the family to big shell in a couple of weeks. _________________ Jeff

Yeah, I was there Monday. And went to about the 8MM in my 2WD.
Conditions were still better there, than parts of the beach north of the PC.
But I still turned around, just not worth it IMO. |

My 4wd went out on me a few weeks ago down south past the high banks. It was an electrical issue which came on with no warning at all. I was lucky with respect to driving conditions and just waited for the low tide before heading back north in 2wd. No problems, but it was a pretty crappy feeling until i got past the 18 or so.
Point being - you can wind up in a bad spot on PINS without being a dumbass. Running the beach isnt exactly easy on a vehicle. I always carry a tow strap and a shovel, and I'm pretty good about helping stuck folks out, even when I think they deserve to be stuck. I'll just hope the whole karma thing works out.
In any event, the bronco is paid for, only has liability insurance, and aint worth that much to begin with. If its going to cost 3k to get it out, I'd be tempted to mark the coordinates on my GPS, hitch a ride back to town, and watch this board until I heard about someone catching a fish on "the rawlbay." |

Just leaving it there is not an option. The Parks Service will have it towed and bill you for it. If you don't pay you may end up in Federal Court. Fifteen years or so ago my Cherokee caught fire and burned to the bare metal. It was on a weekday in the winter and I waited for about 5 hours before someone drove by. My insurance company said they would take care of getting the vehicle off the beach (we were at about the 25 mile marker or so). After a couple of days, the parks service would call me daily and tell me to get my vehicle off the beach. After a couple more days of this they started getting a bit testy about me doing something or they would. My insurance company finally came through after about 8 - 10 days but the Parks Service had me beginning to sweat with their demands. _________________ Big Ed
