Does anyone have a preference on using a Loop Knot vs a Split Ring on topwaters or any other lure?
Its gonna be a good weekend. |

Either is fine....
I hate messing with putting split rings on all my lures so I opt for the loop knot when I need it. |

I use these when fishing topwaters....never a problem and a lot less knot tying.

I prefer the loop knot over hardware for me less is better. I like using the Rapala loop. I also use the double surgeons knot for my shock leader. good fishing IMS. Oh, these knots will easily bring 12-15 lbers, one right after the other. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

You guys using fluorocarbon leaders? I've been doing that but question whether they are any better than just using mono. _________________ Jeff

Flourocarbon is superior to mono for leaders, in my opinion _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

Ditto............ fluorocarbon is much tougher and is also clear in the water. I use a leader tied directly to my braid with uni to uni knots (double uni knot). I start each day with a new leader about 3'-4' long. I to prefer to just tie knots over the hardware. I too have used the norman's but they are hard for me to open once my hands get wet. And the speedclips are too big for my liking. To me and where I fish, hardware tends to snag grass and hang on to it. Knots may grab a little grass but usually will shake clean. As the day goes, I use up my leader. When it gets too short to tie, I tie directly to braid. I hate doing it because I like the clear presentation and having a sure fire breaking point (not in my expensive braid), but I hate spending the time doing it instead of fishing. I too cast thru the guides. I use 15# test leaders on 8/30 powerpro. I also use spinning gear.
I am going to try that DOA loop knot. I like that the tag end of the knot faces the lure. That tag end is what grabs grass first. I think that will be a great knot when you need to go to the weedless and weightless soft plastic. |

Thanks. That's quite helpful. From what I've experienced and read, reds and specks aren't terribly line wary, but an invisible leader sure can't hurt. _________________ Jeff

I use fluorocarbon leaders too and like the stuff but in my experience you have to be more careful with your knot tying and the knots don't seem to be quite as strong as mono of the same test. Having said that, since it's less visible under water I usually go with a higher lb test than I would when using mono too. _________________ Dave

I use a split ring. I agree with the flourocarbon leader (20lb). _________________ Grind |

With redfish, you're right. Not line wary, usually. Trout on the other hand can be very leader shy making it important to make your leader "invisible". Hope this helps. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

I use floro and the loop knot. Some guides in the Galveston area use the Norman clamp thing.
