And just in view on the horizon behind the wells that are behind the turbines a nice clean nuclear cooling tower..... all contributing to cheaper energy and stable balanced economy and increased tax revenues.

I'd certainly prefer to have the landscape remain intact and unspoiled (or rather, no more spoiled). But, I'm also a realist. Bring em on. _________________ Jeff

Being that only 2% of our electricity is produced from oil building all of these windmill farms and nuke plants isn't going to cut our oil consumption. 90% of the oil we use is tied directly to transportation. Now if you can figure how to mount a windmill on top of your car then you have something to cut oil imports. I've been a lot of places that have windmill farms and they really don't screw up the view. We need to place some around congress with all the hot air that comes out of that building we could power the country. _________________ Mastergunner, supporter of hardheads for state fish of Texas |

Maybe someone can enlighten me, but I can't understand why there's such an investment in wind power now - unless it's the subsidies.
One of the previous post made a good point about the need for alternative, back up power supply for the wind farms. Electric grids need a constant, dependable, predictable supply of electricity. Wind power currently is not.
Nationally, the amount of wind energy that actually makes it to the grid is only 10% of the available supply. In Texas it's 17%. So that means while the windmills are turning, a coal plant is still running 80%-90% of the time.
I would love for wind power to be a real alternative, but they're going to have to figure out a way to store the unused energy to be available on a more reliable basis. There are some ideas about storing it as compressed air, ect but nothing feasible yet. I guess if you build it, someone will figure it out later.
I hope there's a real future for wind energy and it's not just a gov't subsidy grab... |

Why? because the energy cost to create wind electricity is $.00. Once you have the equipment, it's done, unlike fossil fuels, you have the equipment, then you have to pay for the source. Not so w/ wind. Bring it on. BTW, I think they should put a bunch about a mile or two out in the Gulf That would make for some awsome offshore structure and help the environment. Not to mention, it will really cut my paddle time down on those offshore kayak trips... _________________ Vegetarian (n)...Old indian word for bad hunter |

In case you hadn't seen this plan. It's not perfect, but can we really afford the dollars pumped out of this country for foreign fuel on an ongoing basis?

No need to strap windmills to our cars. We'll figure out storage. And while the shift to natural gas and wind is not a cure all, it's movement in the right direction IMO. Screw OPEC. _________________ Jeff

I want my own personal wind turbine just big enough to power my house.
Man they are so expensive. I have enough wind to live off of wind. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

Uh, the tip speed of the blades is quite fast. Even if they are spinning at 1 RPM, the tip speed would be pi*diameter*rotational velocity = 2*pi*400 feet/minute = 2512 feet / min = 28.5 mph. Roughly speaking, 30 mph per RPM for 400-foot blades. I wouldn't want to get hit by it.

How many birds do you see get hit by cars traveling 30 MPH? There a lot more birds flying 5 feet off the ground than there are flying 100 to 200 feet in the air and more cars than we will ever have wind turbines. I for one don't buy it. |
