Id like some recommendations for a starter combo for kids.. Id like to start taking out my GF's boys out on some of my fishing trips. One is 10 the other is 5.. I don't want to get them a spidey zebco combo Id like to get them something that's decent and that can land some decent fish. I plan on signing them up for the STAR once they get some experience under there belts..

Ill probably start them off with some fish bites and small hooks to catch some perch then work them up to some larger fish. Id really like to take them on the boat but It will probably be shore fishing for a while. I will eventually take them out on the dargel but it has no sides so life vests are a must. Id like to both have them on some keeper reds by the end of the summer..

I am defiantly thinking zebco for the sake of not wanting to constantly clear birds nests and maybe a lightweight 5-6 foot rod? Shakespeare or what not??

And a Zebco will catch reds. My fishing partner still uses one today for catching reds on topwaters. I get a chuckle every time I hear the whine of Willie's Zebco drag. We gave him so much crap about it that he uses ZebcoWillie as his handle now. And he still uses a Zebco on one of his rods every trip.

Its true!!!

He claims it is his "disposable reel". He has one stuck on a Ugly Stick. He can't feel crap with it so he uses for his topwater rig. And works very well for chunking, working, and catching with topwaters.

LOL.. I gues any baitcaster type rod will be compatable with the zebcos?? I heard the 404 is a pretty decent reel as well comes prespooled with 15 lb mono..

Do your self a favor and buy the reels unspooled. Then go get some PowerPro braid in the 40 or 50# test. It won't get the "spooled" memory that makes Zebco's a pain in the butt. It will cost you a bit more but in the long run I think you will have less issues with the new anglers. And the bigger braid is thicker so it gets less wind knots and is easier to tie. Just be sure you get some scissors for cutting it!!!!!! And those guys will be able to feel the fish better helping them to learn. And just feeling a fish makes a huge difference for beginners.

And yes, you can put a Zebco on a regular baitcaster rod. But I think that a shorter handle bass stick works better with them than a coastal long handle rod. I think it is that high profile of the crank and the thumb button that makes it that way. Willie uses a freshwater 6' ugly stick with his silver Zebco which I think is the 33.

I picked up a 6ft Shimano rod for a about 35 bucks at Sportsman warehouse for my daughter. It's lightweight and should be very comfortable for small hands.
Seems strong enough for being cheap. I've got a plastic fish I got from a Scooby combo tied on and fish for my wiener dog Beans with it in the back yard. Has not broke yet and that muscle missile devil dog is plenty strong, pulls some mean drag.
A Zebco 33 would fit nicely on it.

Man, and I thought it was just me. Zebco 33 is the best starter combo I've ever used. I have a friend that used to use one while bass fishing and didn't care that he got teased. Comes with 10lb line. I bought one for all my nieces and nephews....when they were born. lol

i have a couple of zebco's i have a omega which is great i think its the best one out of the bunch!!!i also have a 33 platinum edition which is ok! a 733 which is pretty much the orginal and a 33 orginal! i always use them for catching trouts there just so useful no time wasted on cleaning out birdnest plus its a tryed and true real

I bought my kids small spinner combos. First just $10 kits from Academy. We used those to learn to cast and catch some decent fish and how to take care of them. That way when they got careless I just corrected them without getting upset about how much their mistake might cost me. After they got to where I was comfortable I upgraded them to $60 matched rigs. They know how to use them and take care with them. Dad has much less stress that way.
