After reading the post about the crap at BHP I decided to take a lot of your advice and surf fish. There's a bunch of beach out there, I aught to be able to find a spot to learn how to surf fish without bugging anyone.
MY QUESTION.... Do you guys use waders to go out in the surf? I don't know if it's necessary or a wimp thing to do. I don't like much of what I see come out of the surf and would rather not be in contact with it but if it's a drag and a hassle that's really not needed, let me know......

Get some reef boots. Shimano has some great ones, use to have red bull but cant find them anymore, the red bulls were lighter but not has protective as the reef boots.
get some waiders if you want to drown or only go knee deep..
remember to do the Texas two step shuffle....
and last thing, once you are ankle deep, you are part of the food chain..
Keep your line tight and fish hard... |

Just go for it and dont think about it , I wear ray-guards now but I think its older age kicking in , enjoy yourself and just keep an eye out , if it doesnt look right its probably not , be safe and just have some fun ... _________________ I,d rather DIE while i,m living than LIVE while i,m dead

| the only protection you need is sunscreen. Bare feet, Board shorts, and a t shirt are the needed clothes. It's the beach, of course it can be dangerous, but so can playing chess with someone with bad breath. Don't expect to conquer it any time soon either, I get a kick out of the people that think it's just a long stretch of shoreline and easy to fish. |

waders would be bad, they'd fill up and you could get into trouble.
if you are not to familiar with surf, watch out for rip tides. They will suck you out. And if you start to get sucked out don't swim against the riptide. You have to swim at an angle back to the beach. Do a search and there is plenty of info on riptides. You could also wear a PFD. Which is extra insurance.
Have fun. |

| If you can afford it, call and book a trip with Billy Sandifer. Your learning curve for surf fishing will increase dramitically. I'm sure he'll tell you in his own special way what he thinks about wearing the waders too. |

If it was January then waders, I use neoprene and due to my "thickness" they form a water tight seal around my upper body I have gone under before and no water went inside. This time of year no waders, shuffle and I don't go past the wade cut if I can't see in the water. Used to but after getting bumped several times in the other cuts I stopped. I usually wade out to the first or second bar throw my line and walk it back to shore. Being a disabled vet with 2 bad knees standing in the waves rocking back and forth kills me. _________________ Mastergunner, supporter of hardheads for state fish of Texas |

Personally, I think waders are hot. I do wear them in the winter, because yes, I'm a wimp when it comes to cold water...The older I get, the less I like it. If you do wear them, only wear neoprene. Bulky plastic waders that can fill with water are dangerous out there, and can cause you to drown. _________________ Vegetarian (n)...Old indian word for bad hunter |

good advice here.. Defiantly stay away from the waders... If a big rogue wave comes along they will fill up and you will drown. No matter how much in shape you are..
If your really concerned just put on an old set of tennis shoes.. that will protect you from sharp shells or crab bites.. do the stingray shuffle for sure.. and If your not the greatest swimer defiantly wear a PFD.. or Just go talk to nick at breakaway and learn out how to long cast.. wont even have to get your feet wet then..

If you are like me the truck that takes you to the beach is the same one that takes you to and from work. I don't want it all messed up and foul with odors that would follow me into the office. Take a change of clothes and throw the wet stuff in back.
I think waders in the surf may be pretty useless unless it is really flat. One roller breaks at the just the right time and you are wet anyway.
GET THE WADE BOOTS w/ RAYGARDS. Besides the rays the beach has lots of critters that can make your life misrable for quite a while.
I always wear pants and long sleave shirts. Buy the Magellan stuff its light weight, and cool. Then no worries for jellyfish or sunburn and dries pretty quick.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate you guys. AND Rodbreaker, you are probably right about me being as wimp but I have just finished 12 weeks of chemotherapy so my immune system is shot. If I beat cancer for the second time and die of something stupid I will be pissed.
I have a tremendous amount of respect for guys like you who know how to do stuff and are willing to share....Thanks
