Mr. Cowan has passed away surrounded by his family just before noon today June 27th 2008. Texas has lost a Conservation legend and Artist extraordinaire. I am pleased to say Jack was very aware of our recent
event honoring him. I told him we wanted to show our appreciation while he was capable of understanding we appreciated him for his life’s work. We had two lengthy telephone calls talking about the old days week before last.
He was very upbeat about our plans to reef and open passes. He really wanted to see all his friends one last time. At least he knew everyone would be there in his honor.
I will always remember him when I see a “Cowan Sunrise” on the water.
Respectfully,
Jim Smarr

| That is sad. He was my favorite saltwater artist. He was the first artist chosen for the then GCCA stamps back in the early 80s. His painting of a spoon hitting the flats just in front of a couple of reds is awesome. I loved his work. |

| I have several of his prints. They are timeless as if they were painted yesterday. Sad day indeed. Prayers go out to his family |
