| The above thread needs to be read completely. Honestly, we are about "this" close to losing driving privileges if this does not stop - speeding and carelessness when it comes to turtles, people, camps, and anything else that gets in the way. 2 turtles dead on SPI and some really idiotic behavior on this end. |

| That was a very good article, and very interesting about the leatherback nesting. It would be a shame if we were to lose our beach access. I'm sure most other fishermen who go to PINS feel the same way about the turtles here. Noone wants to jeopardize the possible nesting of a turtle. PINS is a valuable resource and should not be taken for granted. |

Way to go Ray. I'm sure Donna Shaver would be very proud of you. You could send her a link to this thread at donna_shaver@nps/gov. She's the head of sea turtle science and recovery at PINS. Again, good job.
Later,

| The turtles were run over on South Padre, not PINS. |

Donna is totally involved in this already. She is willing to do everything she can to maintain our privelige to drive on the beach. Now it's up to us to hold up our end of the bargain. Slow down, pay attention, and report turtles. It's not much to ask for the use of such a pristine portion of the Texas coast. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

Those that read this board and others probably are. Sad thing is it is going to happen. Those idiots that we are electing to office are cutting programs that support outdoor type of activities for their pet projects. Here in Burnett county we have lost four parks over the last three years that were 'sold' off to private companies. Two of them were hugely popular parks with boat ramps. One was the best and busiest park on lake Buchanon and it had the best boat ramp as well. It was also free. These parks were sold off quietly and I have been trying to get a reporter to check out how these were sold off.
In regards to Federal lands. While he was in office, Al Gore did some huge damage to the Federal parks and lands. He, through Clinton, installed a different type of Parks leader in many places and mission. Instead of the parks being places for humans to go and recreate, they are now animal sanctuaries and humans need to be kept from going there. The Balcones Canyon land is one such instance. The guy who runs it wants to buy all the land from Lago Vista to Marble Falls and close it to human visitation in order to protect it from us.
We need to fight this and to not give them reasons to close it because they will use it. There are already those that want to close it permanently. There are fights going on right now to close beaches around the country. We will soon be living the Al Gore model. No cars, mass transit, living in what are basically communes if we don't stand up for our rights. This isn't about the turtles folks. If it was, they would outlaw the number one human activity that kills them and it is commercial fishing. They won't do that for turtles or any of the species they are devastating right now. But, they will do it for the recreational users and we won't get it back.
In my opinion, we can only delay it. They are just looking for excuses in the Federal Parks service to take humans out of the equation and turn them into Sanctuaries. Lets not give them reasons and fight to return the Parks System to more of what they were intended. For the common man to enjoy. There can still be conservation as well. |

From the US National Parks history page-
" 3. The twin purposes of the establishment of such an area as a national park are its enjoyment and use by the present generation, with its preservation unspoiled for the future; to conserve the scenery, the natural and historical objects and the wild life therein, by such means as will insure that their present use leaves them unimpaired."
Interesting reading on the Parks site.

Good link. I have no problem with the quoted item three, so long as the prime goal is to follow item number one.
" 1. A national park is an area maintained by the Federal Government and "dedicated and set apart for the benefit and enjoyment of the people......"
What bothers me greatly is the mindset of those that believe that the best way to protect the turtles/birds/animals/whatever is by closing large areas of park land. In their mind, this closure is a worthy goal and they work to accomplish it.
When sections of *Public* land are in fact closed, you'll hear them crowing proudly about how they have done this for the "benefit and enjoyment of the people."
Don't believe it for a second, it's pure bulls###.
What they're really saying is that they've failed and are too lazy and/or incompetent to maintain the park lands "for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", so they're taking the easy way out. Closing off the land and claiming you're doing it for the good of the people is, after all, much easier than finding a solution that accomplishes all the goals of a National Park.
Not only is it easier, but once that land is closed manpower and maintenance costs will drop considerably. The manager of that park can now proclaim that the park is operating in the green because of his/her skill. Chances for rapid promotion have improved.
Yep! the national parks will be wonderful places for park employees to enjoy once they get rid of all those pesky citizens.
Our goal... Don't give them an excuse to close off any portion of the shore. |

Posters like Cap'n Billy and Tyler have done their best to explain why bad behavior by recreational users of the beach could, and I stress COULD, force the National Park Service and/or the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to protect nesting sea turtles by curtailing the privilege of recreational beach access. Unfortunately, some posters have gone off on a tangent, blaming everyone from Al Gore to parks employees to commercial fishermen for closures of parks everywhere.
The sky's not falling at PINS, or even on the beaches at South Padre Island where fingers have pointed at beach drivers as the cause of two turtle deaths (at least one of which may actually have been struck by a boat). Unlike Cape Hatteras National Seashore where a court recently enforced temporary beach access closures to accommodate nesting seabirds, PINS has an approved off-road vehicle use plan, and has repeatedly assessed potential vehicle impacts to sea turtles, birds, campers, etc. on the beach as negligible. The NPS has a multi-use management plan for most of its parks, monuments and seashores that does not generally preclude access unless it might do significant lasting harm. What Billy and Tyler have been saying is that not following the approved vehicle use plan's rules may call for more drastic measures.
On South Padre Island, I have less confidence that the USFWS will be as tolerant of drivers within the parts of the island within the refuge system. Refuges have different sets of management goals compared to parks, are apt to be less interested in multiple use of their federal lands, and could easily make endangered species recovery objectives foremost in their plans. Another thing that's different about the refuge property on SPI is that I know of no oil or gas wells that need the beach to provide access, as is the case at PINS. So, if push came to shove, my bet's on the refuge closing its beaches to protect sea turtles long before something similar happens at PINS.
How could anyone prevent a closure in either case? Work with both federal agencies as valued stake-holders, not against them as hecklers and vandals. Nearly half the turtle nests are discovered by recreational users, and, thanks especially to the Cap'n, the vast majority of the trash collected from the beaches in 4WD territory is picked up by those same users. Much of plastic material in that trash is deadly to the sea turtles, so it's in the agencies' interests to see us continue to use our eyes and hands, our vehicles and our gasoline, to drive Padre Island beaches. If you see someone breaking the PINS beach access rules by driving, parking or camping illegally, photograph and report it when you leave. Report any abuse of turtles, turtle tracks, turtle nests, etc. to PINS and USFWS immediately so they can make public examples of the individuals responsible instead of being forced to take beach access privileges away from everyone. _________________ The Trash Heap Has Spoken!

welcome back john. you raise several good points. it is far easier and better to help change something from within than charge head first into a melee that you definitely can't win. let's all work together to smooth rough edges and then enjoy the fruits of our labor.
remember our troops in your prayers, if not for them, we would have bigger problems to deal with.

I am in absolute agreement. We have an opportunity to take ownership of the issue and make a difference. Confrontation will have a single, decided, outcome.
The success of Billy's beach clean-ups are a prime example of how user groups can come together and make a positive impact, leaving natural places in BETTER condition than they found them, and leaving the park a BETTER place as a result of their visit.

While I don't travel to PINS anywhere near as much as I would like to I consider it one of the most pristine areas on the TX coast. When I am there it is a place to meditate, relax, and fish.
While I agree with much of what has been said very little has been mentioned about personnel responsibility Tyler and Trash Heap make reference to it.
For me that mean’s that at times it is best to run slow in 4 low in deep sand than to run faster close to people, many of us have had people just fly by us with little regard to our safety and even less regard to the nature. When I am on PINS and I stop to fish, once I set my lines out I take out a trash bag and start to clean up the are where I am fishing. I drive a Jeep and am really limited to how much I can carry but I have always had room to take some trash to the dumpster. This is personnel responsibility.
One of the areas that some feel they will be less than is to (here comes the four letter word) snitch on those that just can't seem to place our safety or that of PINS before doing 70mph on PINS or driving where they are not supposed to.
Sometime we have to snitch on those that can jeopardize our safety and a place that many of us really enjoy for each of our own reasons. This is personnel reasonability.
To some PINS is a source of pride in TX, place of peace for others. For some the friendships and relationships that have been formed at PINS are life long. To some a great place to fish.
Whatever it means to us we all have to take personnel responsibility in our actions to ensure we preserve access to PINS. Be it slowing down, picking up others trash or calling the proper authority to get dangerous people removed from the area, we need to do what we can.
I normally don't catch when I am at PINS simply because I have a lot to learn. It is place where I find peace and have formed long term friendships. I will do what I can.
If you ever see a dark blue Jeep and there is a 25ft antenna on the beach that I use to talk all over the world stop and say hello. Better yet say hello and teach me how to catch fish on PINS.
I take my hat off to people like Capt. Billy, Tyler, Trash Heap and the countless others that work very hard to educate and maintain such a unique resource we have in our back yard. If I ever get the chance I would like to shake there hand and say thank you.
