|
|
Today I looked at the full page ad on the back page of the ‘Business’ section of the Caller Times and just about puked.
1. The banner reads, “it’s about time, Corpus Christi it’s about time for a pedestrian beach”
We have pedestrian beaches. One on North Beach, one at Mustang Island State Park and another eight miles south of Bob Hall Pier. If you want to be a pedestrian, go to one of these beaches.
2. The second line reads, “it’s about fairness. There are more than 90 miles of beach on which residents can drive.” “We support the establishment of 7,200 feet of beach as
Pedestrian- only.”
I will address the ‘fairness’ issue further on.
As to the 90 miles of beach to drive on,
True, but most of those miles are for people that have four wheel drive vehicles and are equipped to handle any adverse conditions they might encounter along those miles. The
rest of us schmuks are limited to a lot fewer miles than 90 and those few are already getting more and more crowded with the growth of the city and tourism. As for the 7,200
feet of beach, see No 1 above.
3. “it’s about keeping the beaches open to the public” ‘ The beach is not being closed. the Texas Open Beach Act ensures all Texas beaches are open to the public – all of the public, and we support that. That will not change with this City ordinance.’
Bull ! These people know that they will in effect, create a private beach. A weeks worth of articles on ‘Developed Beaches’ ran not long ago with picture after picture of beautiful beaches with hardly a soul present. I have heard and seen the words ‘pristine beaches’ used in conjunction with the development. In this case ‘Pristine’ means void of local peoples. As anyone who has lived here for any length of time knows, our beaches are hardly ever pristine, thanks to the currents in the gulf that deposit seaweed and human waste from all over the place right here on our coastal shores. If you want to see how the locals will use their private, oops I mean ‘Open Beach’ take a look 8 miles south of Bob Hall Pier at what is known as the North Sticks. See how many hundreds and thousands of people park their cars and carry all of their camping, fishing and picnic supplies down the beach to the National Seashore. HA ! Folks, on a busy day, you may see a dozen or so people walk south from the ‘sticks’ and they are usually pretty much empty handed.
4. “ it’s about a family beach experience’ The development being planned will allow for a safe, pedestrian beach experience. It also will bring amenities such as restrooms, beach showers and refreshments’
How nice of them. A company that can spend five hundred million on a development can do what the city of Port Aransas has done, and create ‘driving only’ lanes with posts that allow plenty of open ‘safe’ beach for pedestrians. They can also afford to build pedestrian bridges so their guests and residents can have safe access to the pedestrian areas of the beach. I am also curious just how long their public restrooms will stay open to the public if the people that use them are the same that use the ones at North Beach, Bob Hall Pier and at many gas stations along the Interstate. (Sorry folks, in all honesty, I have found these to be pretty gross.) I could hardly blame them if they closed them to the public. If this ad is referring to ‘amenities’ to be built in the park and walk areas, then it’s more to do with the ‘parking lot’ experience than the ‘beach’ experience.
5. “ it’s about smart growth that benefits all of Corpus Christi” “Having a world-class development helps everyone. It will bring new jobs, some that will pay as much as
$80,000 a year. It will bring new tax dollars that contribute to all city services, and it will bring new opportunities for local business.”
EXCUSE ME !!! ‘SMART’ growth that would benefit all of Corpus Christi would be growth in our educational system. Place special emphasis on Math and Science. Produce
generations of skilled, intelligent people and we will attract ‘world class’ business and industry with more than just ‘SOME’ jobs that will pay $80,000 a year and much more.
EXCUSE ME !!! ‘CONTRIBUTE TO CITY SERVICES’. It seems I remember something about ‘growing’ the tax base so we could all pay less taxes. Now it seems we must feed the bottomless pit called ‘City Services’
As for new opportunities for local business I think I would prefer ‘Hi Tech Industry’ to
“High Rise Condominiums and Hotels’
Now to the “it’s about fairness” thing.
Sounds like a petulant child, in danger of tripping over his lower lip, stomping his foot and declaring that something is ‘Not Fair’
"You have 90 miles of beach and all were asking is for 7200 feet because ‘it’s just not fair’
What’s not fair is voting for the Packery Channel with the understanding that there would be no restriction of access to either side of the channel and then finding out different.
What’s not fair is a mega-corporation extorting a ‘private beach and fishing jetty’ from the ‘Average Joe’ citizen of Corpus Christi and the State of Texas.
What’s not fair is that it is the tax payer that paid for the channel and jetty and will not receive full benefit. Some Corporation will.
What’s not fair is the City and County raising tax rates and property values all over the Island without regard to people who can no longer afford to live there and have to move.
What’s not fair is for the reason listed above; the island will become an exclusive resort and community for the rich. The average and poor will only get to visit there on their way to the National Seashore or if they work there for minimum wage.
AND
I VOTED FOR THE DREDGING OF THE CHANNEL.
I WILL VOTE FOR NOT CLOSING OUR BEACH
I WILL VOTE FOR ANY CANDIDATE RUNNING AGAINST OUR
SITTING CITY COUNCIL
I WILL VOTE FOR PRESERVING MY BIRTHRIGHT TO OPEN BEACHES.
And people will call me an ‘Aginner’
Let’s not be like Esau and sell our birthright for a bowl of lentil stew.
SIGN THE PETITION NOW
SAY NO TO CLOSURES

Too bad the editorial folks at the Caller Times want it both ways. In their editorial today they thought it would be a good idea for the cost of beach erosion control to be borne by ALL citizens of Texas as the beaches belong to all Texans. Duhhhh? Close the beach so some two bit foreign company can have it their exclusive use of the beach but when it comes to paying the freight it all of a sudden belongs to everyone. Sounds like "Son of Packery": Joe citizen pays the bill and the carpet baggers get the beach. Walking 1800 feet or 18 feet from a parking lot is NOT free access. Check last weeks Padre Island Moon and find the picture of the auto window glass in the parking lot. Wow, the city is just being so good to us I can hardly stand it.
Drive on the beach while you can, take pictures, because it will all be a memory. |

Good point so I just sent this LTTE in. Bet they don't print it but it made me feel better!
Your recent editorial about Coastal Erosion and the need for it to be a statewide responsibility flies in the face of your deceptive "It's about fairness ads and beach access"
The editorial stated "Millions of Texans enjoy and benefit from healthy beaches and the economic effects of the coastal economy is felt throughout the state. That means that the job of repairing eroded beaches should be a statewide responsibility."
So how is that fair that the City can close Gulf beaches to traffic and hand over a jetty to a development but only the City of Corpus Christi voters can sign petitions to overturn the driving ban? The rest of Texas doesn't get a chance to vote on this yet the beaches of Texas belong to the people of Texas.
Now you expect the rest of Texas to save your bacon when it comes to barrier islands and coastline eroding away.
It's about time you looked up the definition of fairness before endorsing the giveaway of Texas beaches. |

We should get together and buy a full page ad ourselves and shove those lies right back down their throat. If somebody with good writing and talking skills wants to undertake this, I will donate the first 100 dollars towards buying a full page ad. _________________ Fishing and Kayaking its a rough life but somebody has to do it. |

Now that the city and their developer cronies want all Texans to foot the bill for beach erosion control it is time for ALL TEXANS to get mad and start shaking thing up in Austin. We all are getting our butts taxed off, this boondoggle in Corpus Christi should make ALL the tax payers raving mad.
TIME TO GET MAD TEXAS ! This whole thing stinks of favoring special intrersts and corruption.
More. If the laws for protecting the disabled for full access like minimum door opening width why shouldn't full access to the beaches be available as well. A parking lot with a beach view is NOT full access! |
