Noneita emailed me and said they really need some able bodied folks to get out to the beach this weekend to collect more signatures on the Beach Driving Petition.
Don't say you weren't warned and you didn't have a chance to act. Now is the time.
All you need are a couple of legal sized clipboards, pens and a good grasp of what the forms mean. The pink one is to stop the current Ordinance and the second blue one is to require a public vote to close any beach to vehicle traffic.
The blue one came out because the last time they tried to petition they had about 8,000 signatures to fight the one ordinance then the city council rescinded that one and put in the Intrawest version closing 7200' making the other petition, the labor and time and signatures a moot point.

Tyler, I did as you and Noneita requested and took the petitions to the beach Saturday morning, not realizing you don't collect there until the afternoons when the crowds are thicker. Didn't get a single signature.

However, I did catch the City using a front end loader to scrape up sand and fill the intertidal beaches on Mustand and Padre Islands w/o a permit from the Corps of Engineers! This was happening in piping plover critical habitat and during the best sea turtle nesting season on record. Went home and emailed the Corps, the Fish and Wildlife Service, the Mayor, the City Manager, the BORG, and the news media about it. Have since learned that something similar occurred near Bob Hall Pier the Saturday of the Memorial Day weekend.

Each day an unpermitted filling occurs AND remains in place constitutes a separate violation of section 404 of the Clean Water Act and makes the City subject to fines for each count. Failure of the Corps to consult under section 7 of the Endangered Species Act before permitting the filling leaves the City responsible for harm to endangered species, which under section 9 of the ESA is also subject to fines and imprisonment.

[Picture certain elected officials in bright coveralls picking up trash on our beaches. Laughing ]

Anyone else seeing similar activities, send me a PM and I'll ask the Corps and the FWS to enforce the laws again.
