Hey Dr.: Those pin or piggy perch work great at the Pier, either live or dead (the big ones I slice in half diagonally and fish them for reds on the bottom and the small to med ones live under a cork for trout). In June though the main bait of choice is the watermelon shad which bite Sabiki rigs. They usually come in all sizes from 2"s to 6-8"s. The reds and trout seem to like the med sized ones, free-lined with a couple split shots or fished deep under a cork. There is also, cigar shad which are longer, but still get hit by fish though they look too big, menhaden which are also pretty big and oily with no scales, but everything loves to eat them(won't bite Sabiki), and Bumper shad which is the less preferrable bait, but is OK if smaller in size.(they are here now) You just put your Sabiki rig straight dwn by the pier and jig it up and down a little. Sometimes you catch whisker minnows also, which a very good bait for trout and reds. Maybe I'll see you out there in June as I know David and Nancy and good luck with the treatment. Like I said in the other thread, buy yourself some Mannolures before you come down.

FB Phil,...Thanks again for the help. That's really good advice about the Mannolure too. We paid fifteen bucks for two of them at the pier. I'm all for supporting the pier but MAN. It sounds like just about anything I get on that Sabiki can be used in some way, shape or form. That's what I love about the ocean. The food chain goes on and on and includes us, so don't fall in. Thanks again, Hope to see you 9,10,11 of June.....doc

Dr.: The Mannolures are alot cheaper at Academy ($2.49)and it is possible to have a few per day bitten off by the Smacs(even with 27# wire copper colored braided type that can be tied instead of crimped). so try the Academy inroute, like San Antonio and stock up. Get the big 1 oz silver ones.
