I am looking to buy either a Shimano symetre FI 2500, $80 at Academy, or a Shimano Stradic 2500, $160 at academy. Is the stradic worth the extra $80? Are there any other spinning reels anyone would suggest around this price range? _________________ Fish like there's no tomorrow. |

Everyone is going to give a little different opinion. Personally, I just bought an Okuma epixor a couple of months ago ($60-70) and it's treated me real well. I dunked it once and it still works the same. A buddy of mine just got one of those US Reels, and loves it. I used it a little and the castability is better with that larger spool. I think they run around $100. _________________ Save the seagrass......Shoot some ducks |

Boy are you going to get different opinions on this one. In the last 12 - 15 years I have bought both Shimano and Penn. Love them both. However, I have consistantly found 2 differences. The Shimano's have the smoothest drag in the business and a smoother gear train, but the Penn's seem to last longer. Don't get me wrong, the Penn's have good drags and smooth operation, just not as smooth as the Shimano's (for the first year or two).
You really can't go wrong with either one I guess, but my next one will probably be another Penn. _________________ Big Ed

| I bought a spheros the other day for a backup to throw artis and I really like it.. it casts like a stradic and has a very smooth retreive. 4 bearings and 80 bucks. Id buy another if I needed another.. I like it much better than the symetre and saraha I have.. |

| Hey Justin, buy a Penn! Give me a call. If we are going to be neighbors you gotta get the right stuff. Too bad you were working today. |

| I asked the same question on this Board two years ago, and like several have said, you will get a lot of opinions - all of them valid. I decided to buy the Shimano Symetre 2500 RI (rear drag) and love it. So much so, I've now bought another one. It's smooth, durable, and does everything I need. Check Roy's - it may be $5 more, but at least, it's local and not a box store. |

| Mg stardic 3000 is what I have an love it for now. About 260 bucks though and the wife has a 80 penn that is almost just as good. If you buy shimano buy it from academy because Shimano's can be fragile and academy ask no qustions just swaps them. Ive returned too many. |

Thank you very much to all of you who replied. I have a penn 430 ssg, and my father in law has two of them, to make a long story short we have had a lot of problems with all 3 of them, mainly the bail sticking when flipping it over, I have had mine serviced twice by a local repair shop and the problem is still not fixed. I heard that the older penns are really good but they make the newer ones different. Well I think i'm gonna go with the symetre, even though my future neighbor is a penn lover. please let me know if y'all have any further advice. _________________ Fish like there's no tomorrow. |

If you have a Gander Mountain around there check out thier brand of spinners. Metal housing, 10 bearing, incredible surge free drag, all for $50.00 ! I own and have had Shimanos, ABU Garcias - Mitchells, Penns and Shakespears. The Gander Mountain is heads and tails better than the others for the $ spent. My second choice would be Shimano. _________________ Dave

Okuma Epixor 30EF ---
Best reel for less than $60 on the market. Features similar to upper lines of Shimano and Diawa. 10+1 BB construction, a sealed drag, and a true 3000 size weighted just right.
I have been using them for 4 years now and they hold up and stay smooth. I can't recommend them highly enough. And you can get them at Academy. Should you ever have an issue with one, they will normally replace it. I own 4 of them and did replace 1 in 4 years. |
