I'm coming down this weekend from Austin with my kids to get a little saltwater fishing in. This will be their first time to the coast and really their first time fishing. When I was a kid going down there every summer, we would hit the jetty's and Bob Hall pier. Are these still good spots to take kids to get a little fishing done? Their ages are 10,13 and 14.
Just want them to come back knowing what it's like to feel a fish on the other end of the line and maybe get some crabbing in. No boat, just poles, bait, and a dad looking to show them a good time.
Thanks for having me as a member. And don't worry, we won't be pot lickers. |

all the places you mentioned are good places to try. Packery has been on fire for trout lately and there's always a chance of hooking into something big out there (jack, red) I would suggest that if you're going to buy shrimp to take along some Gulp shrimp as well. this is a very successful alternative to live shrimp and the lures last a lot longer than the live ones. fish the same as you would a live shrimp. have fun w/ the kids and post up a report afterwards. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

| Dead shrimp at the Port A jetties will land you something and you won't have to carry a bucket full of water to keep shrimp alive. With three kids I would think you could go thru some live shrimp pretty fast. I was there last weekend and guys were catching reds on the channel side using cut mullet and dead shrimp. Guys at the end were using live shrimp under a popping cork or on a lemon rig catching trout. Also, for crab there were some guys with a net catching crabs where the South Jetty meets the beach. Kids were complaining that the crabs were "biting" them so you might find some crabs there. Good luck, have fun. |

unless the weed is real bad, catching whiting in the surf is almost a given...and you don't have to go too far out to cast.
I agree with getting some Gulp or fishbites for your bait as well. Enjoy yourselves...wish I was going to be down there _________________ No matter where you go, there you are.... |

Thanks for the quick responses. I've already bought the Gulp shrimp, Yum sweet shrimp and an assortment of other baits. I went to Sportsmans Warehouse and since I'm a pretty easy sale (you can figure out the rest). I'll try those places and see what comes about. I'll post back once we get back and let you know how it goes. Hopefully we'll come back with a nice cooler full and some good pics. Thanks again!!!! |

| The weather is going to be tough possibly through Saturday morning with gusty N and NE winds so you might need to fish somewhere such as Packery or on the south side of the Aransas Pass Causeway on 361. I used to take my kids over there. We didn't catch a lot but enough to keep them interested. The ride on the ferry was also fun for them. |

You've been given some really good tips. For an added suggestion, when fishing the surf, even with dead bait, carry extra out in a minnow bucket with you. That way you don't have to walk back in to rebait. Whitting are good cut bait and table fair, so don't be afraid to keep a few for cut bait, a bake, or fry. Here's an FYI, my daughter and I fished Mustang Island at access rd #3 on this passed Sunday. I thought we had caught the tide just right, and we did. For 30 minutes. Caught 2 black drum real quick, then stingrays moved in. Caught 5 in an hour. Then the kids in the lines from a quarter mile up the beach. Then the hard heads.
Kyrsten (my daughter) is only 10 but an avid fisher. But, if she want's to play in the water or sand, she gets to. Thats another way to feed our saltwater addiction.
Keep them interested and you will have life long fishing partners. _________________ "I know that you believe that you understood what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize what you heard is not what I mean." |

Another spot is the piers off the Humble channel or Marker 37/Clems piers. _________________ -STAY THIRSTY MY FRIENDS!- |

| I'm not sure how old the kids are, but given the conditions, find a pier or dock out of the wind and do a little crabbing......funny how us "big kids" still get excited when we see something in the net. |
