Hi All,

I've been reading your great message board a couple of days now & have been trying to find other information / reports on fishing around Corpus Christi.

I'm considering relocating from Ohio to San Antonio. My wife & I are both avid fisherman & hunters (she golfs too, I know... I'm so unlucky - not.) I've been trying to research how the fishing is around Corpus because it appears to be the quickest spot from San Antonio.

I have a 25 foot Sportcraft Fisherman 250. It's a hardtop with a cuddy, & a single I/O (Volvo Penta 271 Duo-Prop). See the Boat here. I was hoping to find lots of reports from the gulf, but most of the info I find are from the surf, piers, & bays. Do not that many people fish out in the gulf? Is the fishing just as good in the bays? I have a 63 gallon tank (too small) & I get about 2 miles per gallon. Is there any good fishing within 80-100 miles round trip from the coast?

If everything works out & we move to san antonio I'm sure I will have more question as I'm a complete saltwater novice except for 8 yellowfin on a charter in cabo san lucas. It's going to seem weird being a "novice", I currently know everything there is to know about catching Lake Erie Walleye. The pic for the 2004 album is the 1000th keeper walleye netted on my boat.

So I guess whatever you can tell me I could do with my boat around Corpus, I'd appreciate.

Also, I keep seeing 2 terms I'm curious about. What is "PINS" & "first gut"?

Hope to see you all someday when I move down there from this crappy Buckeye State.

There is plenty of good fishing in the Gulf. Really depends on what you're after.

PINS: Padre Island National Seashore

First Gut: As waves approach the beach the wave actions creates a series of sand bars. Waves break across the top of the bars, the deeper sections between the bars are the "guts" or channels that run more or less parallel to the beach. The first gut is the one closest to the beach sometime only a few feet from the waters edge.

From my experience with this forum, most of us fish the surf, and do a good job of it. However, I do have a friend with a 43' boat in Port Aransas and he takes it out 40+ miles and brings in Wahoo, Kingfish, Marlin and the like. These waters are very fishable off shore.
I'm also from San Antonio and the drive to the coast is very doable....so much so that we are kayak fishing the intercoastal this weekend. The best thing about this area is the options you have...surf fishing, bay fishing, jetty fishing, pier fishing and off shore fishing. Also, there is plenty of fresh water fishing at Medina Lake and Canyon Lake, all within an hour of San Antonio.....then, in the winter, the Guadalupe River is stocked with rainbow trout, so fishing can occur year round.
You will be happy with your choice.....

Check the Port Aransas report on this site. There are also about half a dozen or more good reports from the gulf on this board over the last week, definitley work checking out.

The fishing, both from the boat, and from shore is excellent in Corpus.

There are a ton of great golf spots in San Antonio, and they are building a PGA Village here as well.

There are also lake Medina and Canyon Lake to fish in the SA area. Hunting couldn't be any better than here in the hill country. Deer everywhere, plenty of dove, turkey, javelina, hogs, quail, etc, etc. No lackl of game to hunt.

Of all the fishing spots, you will likely fall in love with PINS, once you set foot on the soft sand, on a clam August day, with gin clear water tinted a light blue-green. Beer in one hand, fishing pole in another. Absolutely paradise.

Thanks for the great replies guys. Now I just need Toyota to call me for an interview.

I'll keep ya updated & I'll be looking for someone to go out on my boat with us sometime to show us the ropes if we make it down there.

Thanks for mentioning the hunting & golf also, it's sounding pretty tempting.

Oh I'm originally from the hills of Kentucky so don't think I'm a yankee because I'm "stuck" in Ohio right now.

I'll second Big John. There are a lot of great options in the Corpus/Port Aransas area. From Port A, you can hit the ICW (the Intracoastal Waterway) and go as far as you care to go up and down the coast in somewhat protected waters, fish the bays around Corpus/Port A and hit the Gulf.

I'm sure it wont take long to get you hooked on the Gulf Coast fishing though, whether you've got your boat with you or not...!

Just thought of something:

Stay outta of the shallow bays. With that boat, you need deep water to run. Stay in the bay channels only. It will be great offshore though, and there is plenty off good fishing right along the marked channels as well.

If youi end up down here, give me a PM and let me know, and we'll go hit the close-in rigs and some weedlines. It will be pretty cool!

Since y'all are hunters as well, if you do make the move to SA make sure you check out www.RiverCityShooters.com. It is a pistol club in SW San Antonio. I split my month 2 weekends in SA shooting and 2 in CC fishing! (I gave up my clubs years ago)

The biggest adjustment you will probably have to make being a fisherman and a golfer is the wind. Yeh....we have lots of wind. Heck, there'll be days when you nail a career 3-iron dead into the wind and it may not go 140 yards.... Smile

Oh yeah....as a hunter our hill country deer are a lot smaller than the deer in Ohio.

Your boat will do fine in the gulf on good days when we have a big high pressure system over the area. We call these days the summer doldrums. Cool is a mill pond on those days that come with increasing frequency in summer months and are at risk only when there is tropical activity. Get a good radio and moving map GPS. Learn to read the long range fishing weather reports like at this link:

Early you will fish near platforms with simple fish finder rigs below large egg slinker. Best baits are large live finger mullet on a 4/0 circle hook. As you learn to fish you will have casting gear for surface feeding fish and deep drop gear for your fish finder rigs. Later you will learn to troll for kingfish and dorado.

Do not plan to take your boat out into the bays - too shallow. You can cruse the intercoastal and recognized dreged channels but that's it.

Hire a guide for bay trips. PM me if you want to go fishing we can set you up.

SA is a neat town and just a 2-1/2 to 3 hours from Corpus.

Howdy,

Thanks for all of the additional tips & links. Between you all talking up the hunting, fishing, & golf and my buddy already at Toyota telling me the deer bed in his front yard, I'm dieing to get down there. Here are the deer I'm accustomed to. Don't laugh at the one on the left, I got it when I was 11 yrs old. If anybody knows of any other automotive manufacturers, oem suppliers, or logistics companies needing someone in Purchasing, or transportation, let me know. Heck, the way you all are talking, we just might move down there without a job. I've got a shotgun, rifle, 4 wheel drive, plus 3 boats we'll just live in the back of the Tahoe & live off the land!!

I guess I could start looking for a farm, or ranch. Hopefully we can find a couple hundred acres for what we sell this overpriced 18 acres we own up here for.

Someone mentioned what I need on the boat. I've already got the radio, fish finder, & a Garmin GPS III velcro'd to the dash so I should be ready to go. I'll just have to clear out all of my Walleye & Smallmouth waypoints to make room. It's no problem to run 50-80 miles on Lake Erie so I'm already used to big water. I've been in 9-11 footers at 4 second intervals so I know the limits. Definately need the bilge pump turned on when every other wave is breaking over the hardtop.

Again, you all sound like a great bunch of good people. If I get down there, those of you offering to go fishing with us will here about it.
