What's the best type of leader to use for bay fishing if you are throwing soft plastics and top waters or does it matter? I was thinking about this the other day while looking at my 9" steel leader dangle and hang in front of a top water lure. If I can see it, then so can the fish. How important is this to catching fish, if at all? Post your opinions. _________________ Longhorn |

I posted up the same topic a couple weeks ago because I was thinking about why I couldnt catch any nice trout , lineshy or whatever , then I caught some really nice trout the last couple weeks without a leader , if your using mono you really need a leader , say 20lb flouro , I use power-pro so I dont feel its as important as far as abrasion goes , you should get some good info from these guys I sure did... _________________ I,d rather DIE while i,m living than LIVE while i,m dead

Not sure if the fish care, but I like flourocarbon leaders on top waters because they seem to stay clear of the front hook better, presumably because of stiffness.
Or maybe I just like to think that to justify the price. |

| I'd say they do in clear water. If you're fishing Baffin right now, not so much. |

| If using mono a good florocarbon leader helps. I use a tiny swivel from roys to connect the main line to leader. Never had any problems and it gives me a huge piece of mind when I get that one bite im lookin for. |

lONGHORN, i use 8lb test, all those pics i post with those big pinko's all caught on 8lb test, with a flourocarbon 14lb test shock leader with no snaps or swivels, nothing wrong with snaps or swivels i just don't need them. I might have had 1 break off in 2 years. I keep pretty much new line on every couple of months i used to change more often but with higher prices and my vast experience i found i dont need to. I like the vast experience part. 8lb tst is not for everyone, especially if you fish around reefs and such. The mother lagoon is pretty forgiving where i fish. We had a discussion the other nite while hoisting a few ( few meaning many ) brews in the ol shop. If i remember correctly we decided that a shock leader was essential. What else did we decide _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

I used to use steel leaders alot and I would say that I probably catch more fish on a flouro leader than a steel leader. I use the tiny P-line 30lb swivels and 20 lb flouro. I like the yozuri brand alot also for flouro. _________________ still chasing my 30" trout |

A steel leader is a no go unless you're targeting smacks or similar toothy species. Go w/ the flourocarbon. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish"

We also decided I shouldn't be allowed to work the log splitter after drinking. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |
