Headed out of Packery this morning with my reduced but mostly new arsenal. It was tough going at first. The water was choppy and confused and the fishing was slow. My buddy managed only one drum off the bottom. The wind died and the water smoothed out and I started noticing decent sized sheephead swimming around the legs of the rig and decided to try something I had read about in a recent issue of SWS. I put a fresh dead shrimp on a 3/8 ounce chart. jig head and started sight casting those sheepies. Then it was on! I caught 2 and Tori, my 14 Y.O., caught two (we lost several). We also had a freelined whole squid out to see what would bite. I had all but forgotten about it when, SCREAM, the reel goes off and Tori brings in the first kingfish of the season (33")! Next my younger daughter Grace is fishing with my newly discovered jig setup trying to catch some sheepies when the rod nearly gets pulled out of her hand. The drag starts screaming on an old Shimano 4000 sidestab and the fight is on. After about fifteen minutes we see what gave her the ride of her life! A 33" jack!! I will use it for shark bait next time I go out unless someone really, really wants it (PM me). Couldn't have asked for a better way to break in my new (and resurrected) fishing gear.

By the way, can anybody tell me what kind of grouper this is or if it is even a grouper?

Good to hear you're back in the game, Cheese. If I lost my gear (which isn't much, but still), I'd prolly be using a cane pole till Christmas. Nice mess o' fish there. I've tried sightcasting to sheepies before in Rockport with live shrimp and i STILL couldn't get em' to bite. All they wanted was to eat barnacles.
Can't think of what kind of fish that is. I'm looking in my Fishes of the Gulf of Mexico identification book but can't locate your fish. That round tail is a clue i'm sure...
*UPDATE*
I've found a couple of fish that kinda resemble yours. One is a snowy grouper, the other a comb grouper.

| I'm not a 100% sure, but I believe that is a juvenile warsaw grouper. Could possibly be a juvenile jewfish. |

The "grouper" you caught is a white-spotted soapfish. They are so named because when you cook them, the flesh just gets real soft and bubbly. Check them out in the fish ID guide. They only get about one pound. _________________ Looking for a River Pickle sunrise |

I would ID that as a fish. Then put your shotgun by the door, as I have mine. "Hello", "your here to pick up who?", "your name is what?" Click, click!!!
Nice catch!!!!, I have yet to see a juvenile, white spotted, strawberry grouper(my guess) caught off shore. _________________ "I know that you believe that you understood what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize what you heard is not what I mean." |
