Question, I'm curious if anyone has tried making scallops from the wings of a stingray. I have heard they aren't that bad. Aren't scallops from the shell family? Like grandpa would say " dont ask just eat it ". I've tried the ones from the store and restaraunts and can pop them like there popcorn so depending on the reviews, if they taste that good I just may have to keep one, one day.

My understanding is that if you're in a cafe or restaurant, the difference between the stingray and shell fish is in the spelling on the menu. ScallOps is the shellfish. ScallAps is the ray. Don't know if it is true or not. Have seen the item on menus spelled both ways. More help please.

Scallops or scallaps, are a shellfish. Bay are the little ones, and gulf or ocean / sea is the large variety.
The texture of ray is not like the texture of scallops really at all. It does taste okay, and is quite good, I hear, if the "tubes" are pulled apart rolled in corn meal and fried. The texture of ray meat is like a bunch of strands or tubes (not hollow though), and each can be pulled apart.
Chances are you have only ever easten real scallops in a resturaunt or if bought from a fish monger.
While ray can be good if prepared right, it is by no means the same as scallops. _________________ GOBZA!!!

Eaten stingray more than once and would never mistake the texture or taste for scallops, although it could easily pass for clam strips. I hear the skate wings are used as the scallop substitute, but can't verify that personally.
Continuing in that vein, they say whiting fillet boiled with crabs makes a good fake crabmeat, halibut fillet boiled in sugar water tastes like lobster, and Ritz crackers with lemon juice make a dandy faux apple pie.. _________________ The Trash Heap Has Spoken!

Good friend of mine had someone fry fillets from the wings and says they were excellent and he will start keeping some rays to eat.

When I lived in the Northwest I ate skate several times at a orential friends house and it was tasty... But don't ask me what or how many sauces were on it.. Just to say it was heavily seasoned... As my Grandpa use to say "if you put enough seasoning on it, a Cow Chip ain't that bad". |

I was watching Emeril one night and he took the wings from small rays, beat them out with a meat hammer, and then chicken fried them. Since my TV doesn't have taste o'vision I don't know how it worked out, but the people in the audience seemed to like it. Personally, I leave them alone so that hopefully they will leave me alone. I don't need a bunch of P-O'd sting rays following me around

seems there not as tasty as scallops. Personally have never cared to even think about messing with them when caught. It will probably stay that way unless someone i come across sometime makes some one day....maybe then i will give it a try until then ill do my best to stay away from them as much as possible. Never been stuck and hopefully it will stay that way as long as possible.

I think bay scallops are sting ray where sea scallops are real scallops. I've had both and both are good. Bay scallops are more along the lines of clam strips in taste where real sea scallops are much larger and different tasting.

Like I said above, bay is the small variety or species, and sea / ocean / gulf is the large variety or species. _________________ GOBZA!!!
