I made #351, looks good as far as being legit. Any and all efforts for the coastal area are great. _________________ "I know that you believe that you understood what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize what you heard is not what I mean." |

Cedar Bayou is a special place. The pass had been open for hundreds of years, and served as a major access point to the town of Copano and other early settlements along the TX coast in the early 1800's. Jean LaFitte used the pass before that. Obviously the bays were much deeper then; before all of the erosion and sedimentation caused by agriculture on the mainland.
Some hydrologists speculate that the construction of the Port A jetties caused a drop in water flows as well as the construction of the intercoastal canals. Today the main problem is the huge mountain of sand that was deposited at the mouth of Vinson slough during the last mis-guided dredge project back in 1995. This boondoggle resulted in the closing off of Vincent Slough and the diversion and re-opening of the mouth to the north which resulted in quite a few more acres of valuable minerals and land to the Bass family.
The latest hydrology study shows that the pass can be re-opened on a more or less permanent basis if the old historic channel is dredged the right way. For now its all about money and politics...
Cedar Bayou is a great place. The best fishing trips of my life have occurred over there. Limits of trout, reds and flounder were pretty common back when the pass was flowing. Please sign the petition, and help restore one of the last great wetlands and passes of the area. |

Development in the area helped Packery get open. Not familiar with CP area. Just beware if the beach closer builders start to support it. _________________ -STAY THIRSTY MY FRIENDS!- |

WOW Just cleared 400!!
You guys are great!!
I Love it when a plan comes together!!
Now hopefully Mr. Dean can make good use of it and get that pass open!
At the very minimum we gave it a solid push, with any luck it will start a ground swell and other sites will jump on board!!
Thanks again to everyone and keep it coming!!

Way to go, Running Buffalo. Now, can anybody show me a copy of the petition everyone is signing? Asked juanpescado already, but no response.
The hundreds of you DID read it before signing, right? |
Johnny looks to me like the whole website is the petition. Great cause
just a little confusing.

Mike, your explanation about the whole website being the petition is fairly plausible, albeit confusing, as you say. I looked all over the site when juanpescado posted the link on Nick's board, and again when it came up on this thread, w/o finding anything clearly labeled as the petition, stating who was being petitioned, and, most importantly, identifying what the signatories would be willing to do, other than to sign their names and provide their addies. Considering the general subject and all the obvious work that went into preparing the webpage, it's a pity that those details were missing.
o_brother, I wasn't trying to point you out to the whole herd. I asked if anybody could show me a copy, since juanpescado hadn't then, and hasn't yet. Your post just happened to be the latest when I made mine, and I flashed on the line from McClintock!, one of my faves. With apologies to you and the screenwriter, let met run this by again: | Quote: | | Yo, juanpescado. Big party. Where's the petition? |

Everyone,
My name is Jeff Dean, I set that petition up a few months ago when it looked like the "powers that be" were going to get in the way of this pass being dredged. Five or six agencies voiced concerns over things like grass and nesting sea turtles. It obviously won't be dredged during nesting season, the goal is to improve things, not make them worse.
Anyone that has fished out there in recent years knows how the fishing is when it's open. It's real simple, shrimp, crabs, baitfish etc. used that channel to migrate in and out of the bays. You don't need a scientist or an engineer to tell you the fishing is better when it's flowing. But there are other issues as well, Vinson Slough used to be thousands of acres of wetlands that was home to not only aquatic wildlife, but numerous species of birds as well. Unfortunately, it's grazing land for one families cattle.
Right now Save Cedar Bayou Inc. and their engineers are in the middle of an environmental assessment to answer all the concerns that those "powers" voiced, thousands of dollars have been spent to date and it will take thousands more to get it open, but the first thing that has to happen is we need to get it permitted, and the petition will be used for that purpose.
Save Cedar Bayou and their engineers have put together a good plan to restore this pass and keep it restored, we just have to convince all the bureaucrats it will work before work can begin.
I won't post any links out of respect to the good people here that own and run TKF, but you can find all the information you want right on the petition site to help you make an informed decision.
I'm sorry that Yahoo is blocking the email, please use a real email if possible, the reason is, we want to state without a doubt that they are real people that signed. Your email won't be used for anything other than to verify your a real person.
Also, I'm just some guy "online", a fisherman, and by no means an expert on coastal hydrology etc. but I know this pass was closed by people, and with the next closest pass being a shipping channel 20 miles away, it needs to be opened by people.
Thanks for reading, and signing!
