Try the PINS. If you have 4x4 you can go a long ways to find what you want. Very Happy

Set up camp up by the dunes. this will help you avoid both the roads and the high tide, which sometimes catches people off gaurd. Make sure your tent fly faces the dunes, not the water, or sand will blow in everytime a good gust blows. Keep a bucket of water by the tent to dip your feet in just as you step in, and a gallon jug for rinsing your legs, to keep sand out of the tent. Baby powder will help dry you up and get the remaining sand off.

The southern beach is better than the northern section of PINS. However, the southern section requires an annual $20 pass or a $10 day pass. Worth every penny, as you will most certainly be back. Do not drive past the 4wd sign unless you have a 4wd. It is 5 miles or so down the beach.

Staying off the roads is important. At low tide, people drive the low raod, mostly, because it is much smoother, but when the high tide comes in, many times the low road is submerged, leaving only the high road to travel on. Neither of these is paved, but rather a really obvious lane in the sand where everyone has driven.

Do not forget the OFF repellent, because at night, when the wind drops off, the skeetters will show up in force. And the salt marsh skeeters from back of the dunes are big'uns too.

Most important, have fun!

PINS is the place to go....we were there this weekend with a green tarp, 4 kayaks and a USA Flag, along with a tent ....we don't go down too far as I only have a 2WD van but the low road was ok. We did see at least 8 people get stuck on the high road, and the sand was real soft. We sometimes use the bright orange plastic "fence" that road crews use to cordon off our site, but most of the drivers were courteous....some like driving 50 mph tho!
Fishing was tough on Saturday....strong current and very choppy. Ended up catching whiting and a skipjack, but the kayaks stayed on shore. Sunday was awesome-I did not go out, but my husband and buddies did and went to an oilrig offshore (crazier than me!!)....limited on red snapper-between 16-20"-got a 3' blacktip as well....we'll be grilling tonight before the Spurs Game 7 Win. Caught several large whiting as well, then it go murky around 2 and no more bites. Can't wait to do it again....
