I got one at Academy a month ago and after the $30 rebate they are now $249.00. Of course I will be waiting a month or more on that rebate and when it does come I am liable to throw it out as most of those things look like junk mail.

If you shoot a pump gun and really want to reduce recoil have the barrels backbored and forcing cones lengthened. Porting helps a little but not nearly as much. I've used ported choke tubes for a long time but my overall impression is that they don't provide nearly as much reduction of barrel jump as backboring. You can do the same to gas guns but you may have to trouble-shoot some additional problems if it causes shells not to eject. Things like using stiffer gas springs, tweaking gas ports, etc... |

Best gun for the salt marhes down here is Some one elses gun. unless you can drop it in the water, back over it in your truck, kick sand in it, and not be all that upset, that is the gun to use. I use a Moss 830. 150 at Acadamey 2 yrs ago and they through in a 50 buck hard case. Friend uses a charles daily and washes it down with fresh water...LOL. hes been doing that for quite some time.
as far as shells, you cant get no deader than dead. They all work. 3.5 shells just make you take longer shots than you should, meaning more wounded birds.
Course I could be wrong in Thought...but the quality guns stay in the closet. _________________ James 4:14 |

Best shotguns on the market= Beretta Xtrema II or Benelli Super Black Eagle II. I have the SBE, along with a Nova(which I hate), and a 870. The best gun for the $ is HANDS DOWN the 870, no question the most reliable pump out there.
As for shells, all I can say is you get what you pay for. I have been an aviod waterfowler for 15 yrs and shot the cheap shells when I was in high school and college. Now I shoot nothing but Heavi Steel, tungsten or Bismuth. Not only do you get a lot better kill/ shot ratio but you also have a lot less cripples!!! You require a lot less shells and will end up spending pretty dang close to the same amount of money. |

If you don't need to shoot 3.5" shells, the Beretta 391 is another good choice that can save a little $ in the world of automatics. |

Has anyone heard of the Winchester SX3. I have not seen it mentioned on this thread, it shoots faster than the Extrema II, so they say. I would not spend a grand on a shotgun regardless, and these guns are not something I would want to take to the marsh. I will go with the 870 from Academy...thats a good price for that gun. Thank You for all the input.

My father won a SX3 last year at the Wings over the Prairie Festival. Seems to be a nice gun, smooth as well as fast with very little recoil.
Some one mentioned back boring to reduce recoil. Absolutrley the way to go if you can afford it? |

If I were you I would go to Academy and get a Remington 870 Express Magnum. It will shoot up to 3in shells. They are on sale for 229.00 and Remington has a $30 mail in rebate good until Dec. This gun has a MSRP of $370.00 and is (in my opinion, I own 6) the best Pump Action shotgun ever made.
