Okay, I have waited all of my adult life to buy a rifle. I don't hunt enough to justify getting some sexy model with all of the bells and whistles. I am planning to get the Savage111 FCNS in .270 from Academy.
Does anyone have that model?
Thanks!

is it getting that rough? i don't hunt but a hunting forum would be a natural addition to the site as long as items are separated by selection. i used to pour sinkers in michigan and tie a lot of different fishing rigs. just cause i dont anymore doesn't mean i couldn't enjoy someone elses ideas being presented. i heard the best gun is a 12 guage pump. very distinctive
sound when you load up. get the drift? _________________ ccbobber |

I've got quite a few different rifles I hunt with. My first gun was a Rem Model 700 chambered in 270. To date, this is still my favorite gun. If your going for any of our native game here in Texas it is plenty of gun. If you are considering going for elk you might want to go up to a larger caliber.
I haven't shot the Savage rifles but I have a side by side 410 from them. Their good guns.
Definitely spend the money for a good scope. Leupold's are a great value especially for a first gun. |

Tyler, My dad owns one and you can't go wrong with a .270. That's a nice flat shooting gun. I have an old .264 WinMag that was handed down to me and it is very similar. You will not be dissapointed. _________________ Save the seagrass......Shoot some ducks |

| I dont have that particular model, but I do have a savage .270 that has been an overall great gun. What is the cost difference between the savage and the remingtons they carry? |

Cant give my 02 on that perticular model but my dad has a savage 270 synthetic stock and i have to say it sucks!! Never keeps a tight pattern. That thing jumps around like its no business. No its not the ring mounts or the shooter!! 270 is a great gun though no doubt. I personally use a 243 winchester. although it wouldnt be a gun for Elk or big game but i only hunt texas and there isnt anything that that gun wont take down. It was passed down by my dad and i will do the same to my son when the time comes. Ill shoot the balls on a tick with that gun!

Forgot to mention, Tyler we hunt in brackettville which is near del rio if you would like to join us one weekend for a hunt. We took 3 nice bucks last year 1 10pt compliments of myself and a nice 8 pt compliments of myself. My buddy got my dream deer out of my blind one morning only because i was too waisted from the night before and didnt want to wake up! its a 11 with a tine broke off so really it was a 12 at 1 time. Drop tine and kicker on one side!! We have lots of pigs and lots of turkeys and rams too every so often. And BTW Boys town is only about 30-40 minute drive! Can always buy yourself a new girlfriend!! Anytime after 11/17 weekend just let me know and we will arrange something. |

Thanks for the offer I might do that some time. Although I will have to stay away from Boystown as my wife would neuter me with the .270 when I got home. |

Tyler,
You won't go wrong with getting a "New" Savage. The Accu-Trigger is one of the best things they ever did. As for accuracy, you will be very surprised. Should keep MOA for you. _________________ It's all about the family..... |

Here is the ad showing it with the cheaper Remington 710. They do have a few more expensive Remingtons

Tyler, you might also check out www.gunbroker.com - it's like ebay for guns. I bought a Benelli shotgun through that site. If you find something you like, you can buy it and pay a small transfer fee. I had mine sent to Padre Pawn & Tackle (they charge $25 to transfer it). I saved a little over a hundered bucks on the gun alone - not to mention that since I bought it from a guy out of state, I didn't have to pay taxes. _________________ Save the seagrass......Shoot some ducks |

.270 is a great round for S. TX. I prefer a bigger gun like the .270 over a .243. You have a better chance of retrieving your game with a .270 if you make a bad shot.
Also, I have had trouble with the bolt actions on a Savage rifles before.... I have had them "hang up" while loading and unloading during predator hunts.
For the money you can't go wrong with a Remington 700 and a good scope.... |

Tyler,
If you are looking for a gun in that Savage Model please consider the 7mm magnum. This cal is super flat shooting and sends a serious message to it's victim. The 270 performs the same on paper but the magnum never let's you down.
Shell prices are about the same also.
Now if you want something that is variable to load you cannot go wrong with the 30.06. I shoot the 300 Winchester Short Magnum _________________ _____________

| Keys on not having to track down you game. ONLY take good vital shots. All my shots unless its a trophy are taken in the neck or head if its a hog. NEVER have to track them. And if its a trophy if you hit them right they will go down everytime. 270 is a great gun dont get me wrong, as a matter of fact that is my next gun of choice as i plan on going after big game eventually. They are also great when taking long distance shots and will for sure put them down (if you hit them right). You cant go wrong with a remington either. |

Do not buy the Remington 710, there is a reason it's cheaper than most other Rem.'s They are built loose and personally I can't stnad the stock on them. I understand why they thought it would work, however it just doesn't feel right. I know they've had issues with the unloading breach-clip of the gun before as well as the scope being a cheap POS. That scope retails for less than $60 so what are you really going to get. The Savage 11 is a good gun after they did the accu-trigger. I bought my son a 110 and had to pay to get the trigger set right.
"You can put a good scope on a cheap gun, and you'll have a decent weapon. You put a Cheap scope on a Good rifle and all you'll have is a Cheap scope." " A rifle is only as good as the shooter and sights." Think about it. |
