Wow that came up fast on the radar today. I got a couple of emails on that proposal this morning but missed the about the meeting.
I can't go tonight as this is the little woman's Birthday Eve.
Any sharkfishes out there that can make it DO SO!

There will be another one on 9/13 at Holiday Inn Emerald Beach

Thanks Frankie!

this is the real deal folks, they have several options in the DEIS that would make it illegal to retain any sharks.......need to get up on this one......

I thought only one proposal would do that, alternative suite 5. Aren't they recommending suite 4, the one that prohibits retention of sandbar, dusky, and porbeagle sharks and allow keeping bonnethead, nurse, tiger, lemon, hammerheads, sharpnose, shortfin mako, common thresher, oceanic whitetip, blue, and spinner sharks. Possession limit: 1 >54" FL shark per vessel per trip, also 1 sharpnose and 1 bonnethead per person with no minimum size.

yes, you're right on Rodbreaker, but the thing is is that even the PREFERRED alternative, Alt. 4, takes away recreational fishermans rights (to retain sandbars and dusky's)......

so no matter what, recreational fishermen will lose rights in this deal......to what level remains to be seen during this process.....

How many are the commercial quota and why is there one? Surely they would kill more than rec fishermen would.

That would sure make a difference as to the number of rods of the end of Bob Hall Pier.

I would never have expected anyone to take such a goofy idea seriously.
What a waste of time and money.
Once again common sense has left the building.

What next ... special stamp for crab ... limit on finger mullet ...
license required for cast nets?

It is a federal proposal so it wouldn't affect anything at BHP. And a license is already required for cast nets.

Got news for you, there is already a limit on mullet. Check it out...

Mullet: May not take from public waters, or possess on board a boat, mullet over 12 inches during October, November, December, and January. No limits apply during other months. Razz

And there is a whole host of regulations on crabs, but no stamp... yet:

I guess I am ignorant as to how that rule applies.

How will that effect the average sport fisherman?

I guess I am confused. The gubment is worried about the shark populations, so they want to stop recreational fisherman from catching them, but let the commercial fisherman keep fishing. I guess that it made so much sense and worked so well doing it the other way for redfish that they should try the opposite now. Sorry, there's no reason why that should be confusing. I must be slow.

And that mullet thing. Thanks for pointing that out. I'll make sure I don't have any illegal game mullets this fall. Can somebody explain that to me. I'm sure it makes perfect sense, but I am a little slow. Confused Confused Confused

The mullet regulation was passed a number of years back in response to the demand for mullet roe by the Japanese.

Seems mullet roe (eggs) are considerred a delicacy especially in the Orient. Large mullet were being harvested only for the roe with the rest of the fish being discarded. Kinda like cutting the fins off of a shark and then throwing the carcass back in the water.

In this case, the regulation made sense.

Personally I dont see a problem with the rules regarding 12" and over during the spawn season..... I would like to see more finger mullet in the next 20 years...Kinda insures the population will grow. Just my opinion on the survival of the best bait out there.
