I would take the OBO literally, 11K sounds a bit high given the very generic nature of those boats. Something under 10K sounds better! _________________ Later,

not a good deal for for a 7 yr old rig....i'd take the 11,000 and put it on a new boat or if fancy was'nt a problem id be scooting around in a brand new aluminum rig, functional and economical. Always be shy of used motors especially outboards. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

People tend to think their used boats are worth far more than they really are. You put 7 years on an outboard, even if cared for properly, chanes are you will have some issues. My preference would be find a used boat and trailer in good shape and re-power it with new ponies. There are alot better boats than Fishmasters on the market for better deals. _________________ Later,

One of my fishing buddies bought a 19' fishmaster at the austin boat show in 05' for 11k/ Why pay that much for a used boat when you can get darn near the same deal for new?

Did it have an engine?
I think your buddy may be yanking your chain... I've never seen any 19' full linered hull (or even a rolled hull for that matter) brand new with a 100 Hp +/- engine for anywhere close to 11 grand.
even a new 19 foot blue wave with a 115 will cost 17K or so.
As for that fishmaster, that boat probably isn't worth they're asking, but the truth of the matter is, that has absolutely no bearing on whether someone will pay the amount. Used boat prices are way up now, probably due to the price of new boats...which is probably due to the fact you can finance one for 12 years, and all some people think about is the monthly payment.
I just checked boat trader to see what people are asking for that particular boat, and it's a little higher with what other used boats are listed at. These other people may not be getting asking price either of course.
I don't think I've ever offered the asking price for anything used in my life though. IF you don't think it's worth 11K, then offer them 9K. You're not trying to make a new friend, you're trying to buy a boat. It's just business. Personally, I wouldn't pay that much for that particular boat, because I agree there are some better deals out there. But I haven't seen that boat either, maybe it was driven to the store very slowley by his grandmother, on sunday morning only? LOL
Check out this link on boattrader... it sounds almost identical to the boat you're looking at.

One of the best boats I ever had was a 1973 Whaler with a 1973 Evinrude that I purchased in late 90's.
Old boat - yes
Old motor - yes
Good price - yes
Only problem I ever had with motor was actually tilt motor having an internal leak and not being able to find parts. I would have to replace entire tilt system or deal with it. I dealt with it for 2 or 3 years meaning motor would not remain in complete "up" position; it would very slowly descend.
I had the boat for approximately 5 years or so and then sold it for $400.00 less than I paid for it, but I removed trolling motor, kicker motor, ice chests, life jackets, etc.
Why say all this? If you can afford the new motor, go for it, but do not compromise boat quality for new motor as only then you will have a new motor tearing up a lowsy boat.
When buying boat and motor, I request a compression and fire check. I ask for all service records. If person selling boat is not willing to pay for compression and fire check on motor, keep walking.
Upon purchase, completely change all oils, plugs, etc. You now have fire and compression checked, and you start on familiar ground.
Hang in there for a boat purchase. Good deals come around, but you have to be patient.
"Knock on wood" but I have never had any motor problems. I have not even changed propellar in water pump after initial fix-up.
Good luck!! |

That's what I am dealing with on Dad's 1977 Montauk he bought three years ago. We had to fix the hydraulic tilt. The arms that hold onto the motor rusted off and Dad had new ones made. Now we are trying to get the motor also a 1977 85 Merc up to speed. |

Tyler,
My grandfather is partial to Mercury. They can be very cantakerous.
Good luck on that one.
I know one thing for sure as I guess is true with all motors, especially Mercury. RUN the fuel out of them after each use. Gas has tendency to gel and throw a piston. Seen it happen many times over. |
