Had a chance to go and do some offshore fishing the other day with my son on his friend's boat. The plan was to go out 50 mi and fish for wahoo. We got about 8 mi from our destination when we saw this big long line of sargasm. It was a narrow strip but it must have stretched a mile or more. We decided to fish the upper side of it and we started trolling and pulled in a couple of dolphin. We noticed every time we caught a fish there were others following along so we decided to stop trolling and just throw lures. We were catching dolphin left and right and I even started catching it on top waters. After putting 20 nice size dolphin in the box we decided to head on to our destination and see if we can get into some big fish. We trolled and trolled and trolled and never did get anything. We had one hit on a pole and it stripped line for about three or four seconds and then let go. The dolphin fish were fun to catch though and they were so pretty and colorful in the water. What was really different about that line of sargasm was on the top side with water is blue blue and very pretty. On the downside of it it was a brownish green with not much clarity. Quite strange.

What you describe is what a "rip" , "weed line" or color change looks like. It's a common sight to offshore fishers but to "noobs" not so much.

The fish aren't always on the blue side either... but don't tell anybody. Wink
