I had seen a few reports of white bass being caught up around George West, so this morning I headed that way full of anticipation in the pre-dawn darkness. I launched at the 59 bridge and worked my way down river looking for the right structure to allow me to fly fish. I paddled six miles and then turned around to pick apart each of the good looking spots as I slowly worked back toward the launch. In one riffle I managed 56 of the little fish, and all of them were in less than a foot of water. Yep, the fish were cooperating and I was smiling a lot as the morning wore on. As I tried a few other spots farther upriver a few more fish came and went, and I got to the truck with 23 nice looking and delicious little white bass. Tomorrow morning I’ll go do it again now that I’ve got the conditions figured out. Love this time of year! Water is comfortable without waders so I was able to just wear my comfy fishing stuff and enjoy the different scenery in comfort.

I fished off the 59 bridge for years at exactly this time of year. First 2 weekends of February. But, we always went upstream for miles. You might try going upstream also.
