This summer has been pretty stingy with low-wind days until lately, and thunderstorms have been more numerous than usual which has kept me off the water way too much. Friday morning I finally got to head down PINS with a buddy to explore some snapper spots. Conditions were nice, and the fish cooperated well enough. I ended the morning with three decent snapper, five Kings and a big Jack Crevalle. The jack and one king hit at the same time on my trolling rods, and as I danced between rods to limit line loss, at one point I stuck the jack rod into the front rod holder so I could pull the king to the kayak - the jack suddenly ran from out in front of the kayak to the rear. My drag was tight enough that it stressed the front rod holder and ripped all three screws out of the plastic, but I heard the noise and grabbed the rod before it could jump overboard. Oops. Thankfully the gulf was pretty smooth that day and water in the hull wasn't a major danger until crossing the surf on the way in. I finished the fight and got both fish aboard before assessing the rod holder damage more closely. At one point I caught a grunt and stuck it on as live bait. It was eaten by a heavy fish that kept running to the bottom, and I was disappointed with the fish finally managed to spit the live bait back out. The fish acted like a grouper, but who knows what it really was. It was a morning of violence and catching, and I left the water with a smile. Asked if I wanted to repeat the trip the next morning, I politely declined and planned to spend the morning with redfish in the shallows. They don't beat me up, and I was suddenly craving an easy morning.

| Outstanding! We went out Friday to the Bob Hall rigs. picked up a modest cobia from underneath some drifting tree limbs, (left over from the storm I suppose) but had to cut it short when one of the guys got sick due to the heat. |

The ripped-out rod holder shows in a couple of your pics. All signs of a really big fish! Thanks for the report. TexasJim in Rockport _________________ TexasJim

I was excited to get some new video, but when I put Tod's pod on my kayak with the fish finder that had the spots marked on it, I realized that I would need a longer extension for the video camera to see over the larger screen. I asked if he had an extension but he doesn't even run a video camera so it was not meant to happen. Next time I'll bring options, but that didn't help this trip. |
