Yesterday I took a few hours off and fished the shallows. I had planned to head offshore, but a guide had told me the day before that he had fished with clients around the Corpus area rigs and that the water was still clearing up and fish were hard to find. So I went with the muddy option instead. At first light I stopped to fish a drain that was pouring off the flats into the larger bay. I caught a couple of nearly legal trout and decided to move on in search of hunting reds. It was a good choice, and I found them working along shorelines and in open shallows scattered all across the flats. At one point I rounded a corner and found a healthy 7' alligator, but he played nice and scooted aside so I could pass. I chose to play with a new rod and reel, the Bates Hundo on a Waterloo Salty Mag rod, and it worked great. It's been a while since I used a baitcaster, but it was like riding a bike, especially after I got the braking adjusted for easy casting. I was casting a paddle tail on a 1/8 ounce head to make sure there was enough weight for easy casting, which is more than I usually have on the spinners but worked well on the hunting fish. I had to keep the speed of retrieve down to avoid spooking fish, but it worked really well once I got the speed figured out. Late in the morning I got out of the kayak and waded ashore to heed the call of nature", and as I returned to the kayak I heard a loud slurp down the shoreline. Just around the corner I could see the reeds shifting around. I grabbed the rod and waited until the reds came to an open spot in the reeds and placed the lure where it needed to be. The last red was a nice way to end it and head home. I had a limit of reds on ice and had released seven more good ones, so I worked back towards the truck. There was other business that would fill the rest of the day, but the morning fishing had been great!

Never heard of that reel before, so decided to look it up...
That's some fancy detailed manufacturing!
I'd be afraid to lose it or have someone steal it..
Does it work as well as the price tag? _________________ Steve-O

| So far the reel is fantastic. I had seen the reels up close and was impressed, and I really wanted to try one out and see if they’re all that. So far it’s meeting expectations. I’ve chased trout schools in high winds and it handles casting into the wind nicely, and tosses light lures a lot farther than my spinners. I’ll keep at it and see how it deals with all the salt that is encountered on a kayak. Let’s hope it doesn’t let me down… |
