Was fishing estes flats the other day with my oldest son, who was in town. As we were leaving the flats to come home, we used the trolling motor to get to a friendly place to start the engine and take off. During our troll, my son was casting his paddletail to try to pick up one last fish. After a few minutes, he casted one last time and after casting, saw a large wake in the water, near where he casted his paddletail. Once he started moving his paddletail, the wake went straight for it and it was game on. Of course, this was using his medium fast rod with a 2500 reel and 15 lb braid. We thought it was a huge bull red, and fought it for a while with me chasing after it using the trolling motor, and it finally found the channel out of the flats and went into the intracoastal, where it proceeded to inspect the bottom. Once we finally saw the thing, we realized it was a very large jack crevalle (like 30-40 pounds big). I didn't know those things came hunting into 2-2.5 feet of water, I've only ever seen them in deeper water. Anyone else seen this?

We ended up fighting it for over a half hour, dodged some boats in the intracoastal, and when it came to the side of the boat for the fifth or sixth time, it took one look at us, did some sort of twisty move, and popped the line. My son had a blast fighting it, though, and at least we got to see it up close (but just out of net reach).

I was fishing topwater from a boat along Laguna Shores Rd, and was just on the edge of the Humble Channel. I kept getting a big swirl at my topwater, and kept yanking it away from the fish. On the third cast, the fish attempted to bite again, and raised its shoulder up where I could see it. It was a jack, but not as large as the one your son hooked. He missed a third time, and was gone, did not bite again.

Big ones no, but that just may be the luck of the draw. I've caught several in the 5 lb class in the Lydia Anne channel, along with Spanish Mackerel. I think they follow the jetty rocks into the bay.

I had a friend catches one in the ship channel not far from Charlie’s Pasture. Definitely not the flats but it wouldn’t take much to get into Red Bay & Brown & Root
