Saturday morning appeared to be pretty ideal conditions, and I was excited to be on the water. After a slow initial start I found a school of feeding drum, so I took my time sneaking close and dragging lures past several of them. The fly rod and a redfish crack fly will usually fire up a feeding drum, but even that offering was rejected by multiple fish. I finally got one to bite on a Z-man lure, and put a first fish on ice. That one pretty much spooked the rest of the drum from that spot, so I kept moving in my search for more targets. I finally found the reds I was looking for at the very back (and very shallow) end of a lake. I had shots at more than 20 exposed redfish, but very few allowed me to get a lure to them without spooking. It was so shallow that the kayak was scraping the mud and making it really difficult to get close to the fish. I finally got a pair of nice keeper reds and released a low slot fish, always hoping for another larger one. Around a corner I saw a redfish swimming ahead and working away from me. There were multiple fish near it, and when I cast ahead of the red, a little drum grabbed the bait and alerted everyone else that something wasn't quite right. Oh well, I came home with enough fish for two dinners and put in just over ten miles, so it was a great way to begin the day.

Nice fish. When catching gets too easy you'd become bored. So I'm told
