I've caught a few unexpected fish in the shallows: several mullet on soft plastics and even a few flounder on the flyrod, but I did not expect this one. One late morning on the way back to the truck I observed a big sleeping redfish. I got within casting range and began trying to gently wake it up by passing the fly in front of its nose. As the fly got close to the fish the line suddenly went tight. I looked down for a second and made a strip-set and when I looked back up there was a wake pulling out across the flat but my big fish was still laying in the same spot sleeping. At first I assumed the fly had found a smaller red that was hidden beside the larger one, but then this guy came to the boat. I removed the stinger and then the hook, and then remembered to grab the camera. The stingray was released, but it was surprising to me that it would eat a hunk of synthetic fur. A couple of trips later I spotted what I thought was a redfish wake coming out of a shallow drain. I casted a soft plastic to it and hooked up with a similar sized stingray.
Anyone else caught stingrays on artificial or fly?

Very strange to hook one that way for sure......
Got up one morning at the cabin and had one dead on the boat deck dead.
I always release them unharmed for Karma reasons............. |
