Anyone ever used salted bait. Its easy to make and lasts forever without freezing. I'm thinking about shrimp and maybe even chicken breast or chicken livers cured in canning salt with garlic powder, koolaide. It makes the bait kind of rubbery so it doesnt come off the hook easily, but puts out a lot of flavor scent. _________________ Now that food has replaced my sex life I can't even get into my own pants!!!!!!!!

I do it with shrimp and small finger mullet. Have been thinking of chunking up bigger mullet and salting those.
I suggest going to HEB and buying their unfrozen shrimp. It's all the same size and not much more expensive than bait shrimp. I use those disposible plastic food bins for the process.
Also, do not use cooking salt. Crushed water softener salt (Without iodine or other additives) is a lot cheaper. You will use a LOT of it.
Note, it will go bad, I freeze them after salting. You can tell because all you will catch is tons of hardheads where a fresh batch is good for just about anything. |

Mmmmmmmmmmmm................. Hardheads!
(But, yea, the salted baits are a decent option, especially in the summer, when the water temps are high. Like said before, they get 'rubbery/harder' and are tougher to steal off your hook (<----- STUPID PINFISH!!!!!). Wal-A-Marks used to sell a whole collection of them, all unrefrigerated). |

You can dry the salt out and reuse it. Dont need to pack bait in all the salt you cured it in. If it already has garlic, koolaide, jello flavoring in it so much the better _________________ Now that food has replaced my sex life I can't even get into my own pants!!!!!!!!

I don't add any scents or such and a 50 lb bag of salt is just over 6 bucks so it's not worth the effort. |

I can store a lot more bait in one container if i shake the salt off somewhat first after the bait has had most of its moisture pulled and is ready for storage. The bait loses a lot of flavor and scent after being salted. Most fish tend to like garlic scent and red flavors of koolaide or jello flavor according to everyone I have talked to. _________________ Now that food has replaced my sex life I can't even get into my own pants!!!!!!!!

Interesting
I may try this.
We were in Alaska fishing for Silver Salmon. The guide teaching us how to use roe. He had prepared it with a roe curing product mixed with raspberry jello. It was the only time we used bait. The incoming salmon are not feeding but this was something they just had to pick up and move. |
