Decided to take my son out fishing this morning and we start pulling away from the house about 8:30. We get out to the end of the marina and I cranked the boat up get it up on plane and start heading out across the flats. About 15 seconds into our trip I'm doing about 30 miles an hour when a big horse mullet comes flying out of the water. I duck and it hits one of my fishing rod. It rips off one of the guides and also snaps the end of my rod off and then crashes into my arm before landing back behind my seat. Not a fun way to start a trip. After getting the rod taken apart and put away we proceeded to go out and fish. We caught a bunch of fish early. Nothing to really write home about and then by 10:00 it shut down. Came home and I guess I'm going to have to buy a new rod.

Dodged a bullet there. If you came away with all yer eyes and no blood shed, you did good.

Wow, that's kinda scary actually..
Never even thought to keep my eyes out for that!
Glad you weren't hurt.
BTW, I love my hand-me-down Castaway from my son, and also love my Shimano rods

The positive side the whole story is that I went over to Roy's to get a replacement and found two rods for the price of one that are quite a steal. Try them out today and they seem to be well worth it

Reminds me of an all-time mullet morning some buddies and myself ran across a couple of weeks ago. Started the morning with a couple of slower wades grinding out some flats, and decided it time to leave after breaking the dry streak by catching a mullet on a perfect hook set right in the corner of his mouth on a DSL. Then to top it off, I caught one head-on in the thigh at about 30 mph on the way back to the ramp. The sob went straight over the bow and made contact next to the console, honestly kind of impressive aerial acrobatics.
