I launched near the Mustang Island State Park to visit the rigs and put in a few miles, hoping to paddle the lingering soreness out from Saturday's Cobia battle gone sideways. It worked, and I feel much better now. After 14 miles on the water I found lots of fish, gentle breezes and easy paddling conditions. It was just the solo day I was hoping for.
Water beyond the surf is sitting at 75 degrees with about 15 feet of visibility, which actually kept me from overheating while paddling. Using a bottle with the lid cut off, I could dip up cool water and pour it over shoulders and head to stave off some of the heat. I don't think this is a coming deepwater upwelling, but it was odd to find the water that cool out there. Fish were only in a couple of spots and not scattered all over, but that's the benefit of quietly paddling all around the rigs. You can find them and take advantage of the stealthy transportation for a full day of catching fish.

| I'm concerned about the cooler water, I hope it does not last all summer. As an aside, what kayak are you using these days? |

The cool water would be better if it was super clear. I know cold water ruins the surf fishing, but it's fire offshore. My kayak is the Stealth Fisha 555, and it's a fast fiberglass boat that's extremely well thought-out. I couldn't design one any better for this type of fishing. |

I just looked at ripcharts, and the upwelling is owning it right now, from Tampico all the way north to past the coastal bend...
incidentally, for those of you wondering about the upwelling, it is indeed seasonal, every year...here's a little paper that explains it
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/225663441_Seasonal_upwelling_on_the_Western_and_Southern_Shelves_of_the_Gulf_of_Mexico
you may be able to enter the keywords and find a copy of the article that isn't behind a wall..
